Firmware upgrade for a USR 56K Voice Faxmodem EXT 00568400

Hello smile

A friend of mine has an USRobotics external modem, a one that looks very similar to mine, and so he asked me if I could upgrade his modem with the same firmware I use. I thought “Well, that’s easy”, believing both modems were identical. But they weren’t.

Using USRobotics Modem Identification Wizard (http://www.usr.com/support/s-miw.asp, http://www.usr.com/download/v92/miu.exe) I found the following information about my friend’s modem:

Product ID: 00568400
Model Number: 5684
Serial Number:
ATI3
U.S. Robotics 56K Voice EXT V4.9.1
OK
ATI7
Configuration Profile...
Product type: US/Canada External
Product ID: 00568400
Options: V32bis,V.34+,x2,V.90
Fax Options: Class 1/Class 2.0
Line Options: Caller ID, Distinctive Ring
Voice Options: Speakerphone, TAD
Clock Freq: 92.0Mhz
EPROM: 256k
RAM: 32k
FLASH date: 2/24/98
FLASH rev: 4.9.1
DSP date: 2/24/98
DSP rev: 4.9.1
OK

All these data led me to the official USRobotics Support page (http://www.usr.com/support/product-template.asp?prod=5685) where I found almost nothing but an old Win 95/98/NT driver.
I should add at this point that the modem has no power supply, no manual, no CD with software or drivers, no cables... Absolutely nothing but the modem itself.
Windows XP/2K have native drivers for this modem. I’ve tested XP only, and it identified the modem immediately, so I’m sure it’s working fine at least.

On another thread of this forum I found information about the power supply I’d need: 9VAC, 1A (http://www.howtofixcomputers.com/bb/ftopic204961.html)

Any idea if there is a firmware upgrade for this modem?
Would it be possible to flash its ROM whit the same update I used for my modem? Do they have the same or similar hardware architecture?

This is MY modem:
3Com U.S. Robotics 56K Message Modem (V90 56k Ext)
Product ID: 00566801
Model Number: 5668
Serial Number:
ATI3
U.S. Robotics 56K Message Rev. 14.13.57
OK
ATI7
Configuration Profile...
Product type: US/Canada External
Product ID: 00566801
Options: V32bis,V.80,V.34+,V.90,V.92
Fax Options: Class 1/Class 2.0
Line Options: Caller ID
Voice Options: Speakerphone, TAD
Clock Freq: 92.0Mhz
EPROM: 256k
RAM: 32k
FLASH date: 2/28/2006
FLASH rev: 14.13.57
DSP date: 2/28/2006
DSP rev: 14.13.57
OK

And this is the page where I found all the updates for MY hardware: http://www.usr-emea.com/support/s-prod-template.asp?loc=span&prod=5668b
Have in mind that it’s in Spanish, as I live in Argentina and I always try to find downloads in Spanish if possible.
I’ve flashed the ROM several times, and I should say I’ve been lucky in choosing this particular modem because USRobotics’ Support keeps updating it wink

Any help or user’s experience on flashing would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your advice John smile

I've been "digging around their FTP site" as you suggested, but unfortunately the firmware update you found is V4.9.1, that is, the same that came preinstalled on the modem frown
The only advantage is that firmware and flasher are integrated on the same file, and you can flash "on the fly" just double clicking the EXE file; in other words it's just a more convenient pack. I'll keep a copy, just in case I screw things up wink

I still feel tempted to try the 00566801 firmware. Does anybody know if USRobotics' modems share the same hardware architecture and only differ on the firmware they have? Or are they physically different?

Nanoware:

I went through a simular problem a few years ago with a USR 5686. I
finally got it working using a third party flasher program "Sportster
Modem Flasher" from this site:

http://smf.ai.ru/smf.html

http://smf.ai.ru/faq.html

IIRC at one point I had to open the modem and short pin #1 to ground
while I powered it on get it to accept the flash. I used 'SMF" in
"expert mode" that basicly says "Ignore all the errors go ahead and
install the firmware."

Nanoware:

From the FAQ:

"Open modem or computer, that there was an access to modem's chips.
Find a flash chip, there is a label with the check-sum, beneath there
is a marks of firm: "AMD", "Intel" and digits of a type È29Fxxx. The
first leg is always marked with a point or recess. It is necessary
during switching on the computer or modem to give "ground" on one of
higher address line. Third pin usually is the best. If third hasn't
helped try 2, 29, 28, 30, 1 and 48 pins. If in the terminal window on
command "AT" there is an answers "Boot>" - it is possible to flash
another firmware."

If my notes from 2004 are correct;
"Grounding Pin 3 On the EPROM during power on and I now get a
BOOT response from the modem"

Good Luck

John
