I have an older system here that is in regular use that has a Tyan
S1590S motherboard. It currently has the maximum listed (at the time
it was acquired) of 3 128M DIMMs for 384M.
I noticed in looking through the support documetns on Tyan's site that
there were two companies who had 256M DIMM's certified to work on this
board. I'm not sure if the dearth was due to a lack of 256M DIMMs at
the time or another limitation but does anyone have experience running
256 instead of 128M ECC DIMMs on this board?

hi ,
had even running 3 x 256 ecc module perfectly on this board for 2 years

Too much RAM on that chipset creates a bottleneck. IIRC it depends on the
cache size on the board. Most were sold with 1M cache, which IIRC could only
handle up to 256M of RAM. I had a single 256 in mine for a long time, and
tested another that also worked before switching it to a pair if 128s. Right
now it has a Crucial 256. I never tried ECC.
