I've got a MSI 845 Pro Ver 1, and I'm trying to replace two old hard
drives with a Western Digital Caviar SE 250GB (IDE).
I used Partition Magic to split it into two NTFS partitions and Ghost
to copy my drives on to them, and copied the MBR of C:. It refused to
boot, even after I renamed the drive to C:, and that's when I realised
BIOS wasn't registering it at its proper size.
I used the MSI Live Monitor to flash the BIOS and LBA's apparently on.
XP and Ghost recognise it fine, I'm wondering why if the BIOS is why it
won't boot or if I stuffed the copy. If it is the BIOS, what can I do?
Is the Mainboard too old? |

WD have a technical point on their website about this:-

Thanks mate! It appears from that article that I don't have a 48-bit
LBA supported BIOS. Is there any remedy for that? |

Urrhhh... That's about the end of my technical knowledge on this
point, although the obvious that comes to mind is updating the
BIOS, if a newer one exists for the mobo in question...

Anyone else out there have any ideas? |

Hi,
This is probably too late response, but, if an updated BIOS is not
available that supports the larger drive, then getting an ATA-100/133
PCI card would probably allow access to the whole drive.

If your running Windows XP SP1, then that's the problem. You have to be |
running SP2 to see the larger hard drives. There are a couple of
solutions
1) use the utility that came with the hard drive or
2) get a copy (or make one) of the install disk with SP2 you
can make one by downloading SP2 and using a program called slipstream
that integrates your original disk with sp2 and makes an new image
which you can burn.
3) Or you can just partition the empty space as drive X and use it
that way. Just go into control panel and administrative tools ..you
will find the util there to add the unformatted space. |

With a Windows XP SP2 CD I still had the problem on a new system build, such
that if it had been an upgrade I would have had fatal problems with a
pre-existing 250GB partition. Since it was a clean install the bump-up to
250GB from 137GB recognized went without a hitch... but throughout this
smelled like a problem that would have been solved with a floppy driver to
place via F6 on initial install.
As I'm not too interested in building our third machine from scratch again,
this will have to wait until I build another new machine for someone - which
of course might well be in the post-Vista world. (I am however looking
forward to the Robert Fripp music I'll hear during the install...!)
