|
|
Hi. I had to do a full reinstall of my system. Now I can't change my Home Page. I tried everything:
1. Ran virus/trojan/spyware checks (it doesn't appear to be the product of a trojan as it remains on gateway.com)
2. Disabled/removed all anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall programs as well as toolbars.
3. Disabled everything but the most crucial startup items
4. Relaxed security for Active X components
5. Removed and reinstalled IE Windows component
Any ideas? I don't know what to do next.
Thanks |

Hi...a follow up...if this helps.
I tried a few registry changes, but to no avail.
I then downloaded StartPage Guard. I tried to change the home page with that and I got the following error - RegSetValueEX failed with: 5.
Does this mean anything to anybody? |

Re. hijackthis: "to a trained eye". VERY appropriate. One false move
deleting something with hijackthis and the system can be hosed.
After the clean Windows install, did the OP install all the Micro$oft updates,
patches, corrections, bubble gum and paper clips from the Window$ Update web
site? ... Ben Myers

I think yo udo have a virus or somethig that seems to spam newsgroups
;)
Seriously though. From a clean windows install you should expect to be
able to make the change. But I guess you using a gateway recovery CD -
which is why it set to Gateway homepage? I guess they may have
something - but if that the case you should be able to ring support
and ask them how to change?
Alternatively - if you think it something else - you could use "Hijack
this"
http://www.download.com/HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10379544.html
Which captures all what is started up on your PC and (to a trained
eye) should identify what bit of code or registry entry is the cause
of your problems.

Good point re the updates - Its so obvious (to me) that this may be a
factor that I struggle to think that this needs to be pointed out -
but you correct to make sure it clear.
The "to a trained eye" comment should also be clarified for the OP.
Its not a glib comment, but there are forums boards (I dont have link
to hand) where you post the results and the experts help out by
pointing out the problems.
