|
|
I currently own a IOMAGIC 52x external cd-burner. I've used it for
quite a long time without any issues. CD's would burn under 3 minutes
as expected. One day, however, it suddenly decided to burn down to
practically a crawl. When I choose to burn at 52x, the CD would only be
able to attain a maximum of about 12x and burn the CD's improperly at
the end (when I look at the burnt CD, i notice little sections where
the CD seems to not have been burnt). The only way I can properly burn
any CD is if I set my programs to burn at a speed of 8x or 16x. Most of
my blank media is made made to burn at a max of 48x but still burn
slowly when I set the programs to that speed. I've plugged it into all
of my other ports but still get the same issue. Any suggestions to fix
this issue? My desktop has a 2GHz Athlon XP processor with 1GB
DDR-PC3200 RAM and enough free hard drive space. My burner is connected
to USB 2.0 ports. |

Try clean the laser and lube the rails the laser assembly rides on. If
still problems, it may have reached its end.

The slimiest friggin SOB Mike Richter has been for YEARS
blaming the UDF to weasel out the bugs of DirectCD:
------------------------------------------
UDF is a fragile format
UDF is an unreliable format
the format is very fragile and unreliable
The format is bad - it loses data
The fault is not with the software but with the format
There is an inherent problem in UDF
I have used only DCD for packet writing,
have had no problems due to the software
- but too many due to the format itself
to bother with it any longer.
------------------------------------------
But then again:

First, your problem is not with UDF

Thanks for the suggestion. What should I use as a lubricant to loosen
up the rails? I don't want to apply any foreign liquid. The only
lubricant I can think about right now is WD-40. Would that work?

Often recommended:
Radio Shack Archer Precision Lubricator with Teflon

Due to the inadequate lubrication of mechanical parts of the
Ricoh 7080 write failures and/or lockups of your computer may occur.
Take the unit out of the computer, remove the bezel, the lower cover
and the top cover. (in that order)
Eject the loading tray by pushing against a plastic lever with a small
screwdriver, just below the loading tray, situated at approx. one
third from the right hand side.
Next you need to remove a metal plate, approx. 5 x 12 cm with a
plastic CD hub in the center, by removing 2 small screws.
Then, viewing from the front side of the burner, a lead screw is
visible on the right hand side of the laser unit as well as two
slide bars, one left and one right.
The far end of the lead screw has a plastic gear attached.
The parts that require lubrication are:
1. The lead screw
2. The two slide bars
3. The plastic gear
Apply some light grease (from my previous experience with lubing the
Ricoh 7040/7060 models I know that industrial vaseline will do the
job just fine, but most people appear to prefer using some kind of
Teflon lube gel which should be available from Radio Shack) and after
reassembling and reinstalling the unit, your Ricoh 7080 may/will
perform flawlessly again.
