I have a GW Performa PC with Sony CD-RW CRX 215E1, and Toshiba DVD-ROM
SD-M1212 which few days ago stopped performing and according to Device
Manager is no longer recognized.
What might be the problem, and how to correct it?

A quick response with some possibilities:

Loose cable?
Windows software messed up?

VERY unlikely that both drives would stop working at the same time. The only
way this could happen is if drives were jumpered master and slave and the one
jumpered as master failed. Many BIOSes will not detect a slave drive when no
master is functional.

And this leads to an interesting question: Are the drives detected and visible
in the BIOS setup menus? ... Ben Myers

Start from the drive and work to the mother board.

Is there power?

Is the power cable plugged in fully?

Is the data cable connected snuggly at both ends? Ditto for the audio
cable.

Is the controller working on the M/B? Are other drives connected to it
recognized?

Does your system show any unknown devices?

Are the drivers installed and working? A reinstall of the current software
drivers shouldn't cause any problems.

Can you try the drive in another machine?
