|
|
My Adaptec 29160N runs correctly with an MSI 845E-Max motherboard
(MS-6566E, BIOS version 6.0) and a Matrox G450 (32 MB AGP) graphics
card under Windows 2000 SP4/UR1 (fully patched). I've configured the
PC to go into standby with Windows power management and the standby
has been configured in the motherboard BIOS as S3/STR
(suspend-to-RAM). Wake-up (resume) is either via mouse clicks or a
keyboard password. It's been working fairly dependably for several
years, except for occasional bugs in MS security patches (see
http://tinyurl.com/n3ew3 ).
Anticipating Vista Aero, I recently swapped my graphics card for an
EVGA NVIDIA GeForce 6200 (128 MB AGP). I used two driver versions,
both rated WHQL, 91.31 and 84.21, but consistently had the same
problem -- the PC would go into standby correctly, but would not
resume. Either the screen would remain dark or it would briefly power
up to reveal a corrupt desktop, with most or all icons missing, and
then power off, requiring a reset.
I traced the problem to a conflict with the 29160N. If the card was
disabled in Device Manager and the PC rebooted, subsequent
suspend/resumes would work normally. I was running with the
MS-supplied SCSI driver, version 5.0.2195.6717 (in Device Manager),
file version 5.0.2195.6655.
Here are my questions:
1. If you are using an SCSI card under Windows 2000 SP4/UR1 and an AGP
graphics card with 128 MB or more of RAM *and* you are successfully
using S3 suspend-to-RAM with no resume problems, I'd like to know the
graphics card model, as it will guide my next purchase. (If it's an
NVIDIA card, I'd certainly like to know more about your
configuration.)
2. If you have noticed similar problems between your graphics card
driver, your SCSI card and resume from S3 suspend-to-RAM under Windows
2000 SP4/UR1, I'd like to know that, too. If this is a problem that
occurs with other systems (as I strongly suspect), there may be a
convincing argument for MS to add an SCSI card to their WHQL test bed
for graphics cards drivers.
regards, Andy

I am.
Adaptec 2940UW using Microsoft driver 5.0.2195.6717
GeForce 6600GT AGP & v91.31 nvidia drivers
Windows 2000 SP4
Athlon 64 X2 CPU

I don't normally use "Stand By" (i.e. suspend to RAM), but tested it
after seeing your post. The first time, the machine came back after
suspend with a blank screen, but the mouse pointer was present and could
be moved around. No keypresses could persuade the display to return.
Typing blind, I pressed the Windows key, then arrowed up for Shut Down,
pressed Enter for OK and after briefly displaying the normal desktop,
the machine shut down okay.
I ran the BIOS setup, which has an option to run "VGA card BIOS on
return from suspend", enabled that, and after that found that the
machine resumed from standby normally.
Hope that helps. If you'd like to know more about my config, just post
back.

Hi, Mike.
FOA, thanks for performing your tests.

My motherboard's BIOS has a similar option: Power Management Features
| Re-Call VGA BIOS at S3 Resuming
I normally leave this disabled -- it's not compatible with the Matrox
G450.
I uninstalled the Matrox drivers, shut down, replaced the Matrox with
the Nvidia 6200, started up the PC, entered the BIOS, enabled "Re-Call
VGA BIOS at S3 Resuming", booted into W2K, installed the 91.31 Nvidia
driver set, rebooted, configured resolution and refresh (with only a
single analog monitor -- no TV or secondary monitor installed), went
into resume via Start | Shut Down... | Stand by.
Then I left the PC in standby (S3-Suspend-to-RAM) for more than 5
minutes. (The time span is, in my experience, important.)
The PC powered up on the right key-presses, but the monitor stayed
dark and the keyboard was unresponsive. (If I tried to use the
keyboard shortcut I've set up to go into stand by, nothing happened.)

Please try standby for 6 minutes. What happens when the PC is resumed?
thanks again and regards, Andy

If you leave your PC in standby (S3-Suspend-to-RAM) for more than 5
minutes, what happens when the PC is resumed? Does the monitor turn on
correctly? Does the keyboard still respond? (please see my post dated
September 7, visible here: http://tinyurl.com/fy9mx )
TIA and best regards, Andy

What's wrong with answering to that post and quoting it, or
cut and paste it's contents in the new message or
just reference it like this: news:lssvf2942domj6sj2jtalbqn2kf7sooosp@4ax.com
which will automatically happen if you answer to that post, unless your
urge to snip begets you again.

I promise will post back when I get a chance, Andy. Have been abroad
working, and normally my PC is on 24/7 and only infrequently gets
rebooted.
