I am trying to flash my ecs k7s5a (rev ??) with "HRTIBIOS v9.00" rel.
11/06/2004, but it won't work!
Rather the 'press ctrl+home' doesn't seem to do much. I may enter a screen
with a choice to boot either from drive A 'controlled by ROM-BIOS' or
drive C 'controlled by ez-bios'.
I try drive A but only get messages that the disk (containing the file
AMIBOOT.ROM) cannot boot, and then the PC boots from drive C into windows.
What to do? I recently bought a larger (160gb) HD which I would love to get
running properly (meaning all 160 gb! - at present only about 128 gb shows
up)
Please...pretty please with sugar on top... help!!!

PS: I have no cabinet speaker so I can't hear any beeps. |

Buy an AT-133 IDE controller from NewEgg for $12 and leave your BIOS alone!
Are you sure the BIOS you're attempting to load actually runs drives larger
than 128GB? I thought that series was mostly used for overclocking. I'm
still not even sure that the onboard IDE controller will handle larger
drives, no matter what you do to the BIOS. That's why I've put AT133 IDE
controller cards into my K7S5A's. No fuss, no muss and two more IDE
connectors so that all your drives can have their own channel.
At first I used name brand cards like Promise and Adapatec, but I found the
generics to be just as good. Fortunately, these motherboards have lots and
lots of slots so it's usually not too painful to add an IDE card. The ones
I've bought from NewEgg even have RAID built in, and that will come in handy
when I retire one of my active K7S5A's to server duty. There's also a great
benefit using RAID on a swappable card instead of off the motherboard. That
way, if the motherboard fails, you can still retrieve your data easily.
It's also cheaper to have a $12 spare RAID card than a $100 spare
motherboard.

Although I have not used the card listed below, I don't see why it shouldn't
work for you. The IDE-only cards I use from NewEgg are also made by Syba,
so I can at least vouch for the company, if not this exact board:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16815124023
It does both IDE & SATA (*with RAID* if you want it as a bonus!) card for
$14.99. It's got 2 x Serial ATA 150 + 1 x ATA 133 connectors and a 37 page
manual.
NewEgg has an excellent return policy if it doesn't work out. Shipping's
$4.99 extra. Though I am not using SATA in any of my machines that have
only IDE connectors, this card is tempting enough for me to try when PATA
disks start getting rare - which is already beginning. Circuit City was
selling PATA WD250 Gb's for $50 after rebate a week or so again and that
cleaned out their inventory around here right quick!

Be sure to let us know how it works out. The customer reviews seemed to be
favorable - and they've been a good guide, so far. Whether it will actually
boot or work in *your* particular machine is always in the hands of Random
Chance. :-)
Be sure to back up anything critical when fooling around with drive
controllers. I'd also run some sort of diagnostic to note the assignment of
IRQs before making the switch on the odd chance there's a conflict you need
to resolve in the BIOS. I don't think you'll have much trouble. My
experience has been that IDE add ons go a lot more smoothly than a high-end
video card installation.
