I have a client, which I will be moving from a workgroup environment,
to a Active Directory structure. The client has 5 PCs, with Windows XP
home on each (OEM install).
Is there a way to upgrade the PCs from XP home to XP Pro with minimal
complications?

1. Purchase a conventional "Retail Upgrade Version" [boxed] of Windows XP Professional
for each computer currently running Windows XP Home Edition.
2. Uninstall your antivirus program.
3. Perform a backup of your important documents and files to a CD, DVD, or other backup media.
4. Disconnect all hardware peripheral devices, except the monitor, keyboard and mouse.
5. While running Windows XP Home, insert the Windows XP Pro CD in the drive and select
the default "Upgrade" setup option. [Do not select "New Installation"]
6. Visit the Windows Update site to download all the critical updates.
7. Reinstall your antivirus program, then defrag your hard drive.

Sure. Buy a copy of the XP Professional Upgrade version for each PC and
iinstall them. Although the upgrade from Home isn't mentioned on the box,
it's a valid upgrade path. In fact, because there's so little to change,
it's the easiest and most likely successful of all possihble upgrades.

Back up the information on all 5 machines using F.A.S.T. (start > all
programs > accessories > system tools > File and settings transfer wizard)
backup all with the other option and save them all to an external storage
device.
Then run the upgrade install of windows xp pro on each computer. On any
that you encounter problems on you can format them and do a clean install of
windows xp pro and then install all drivers and programs and run the F.A.S.T.
to recover all their old information. That's all it's usually pretty easy.

WinXP is designed to install and upgrade the existing operating system
while simultaneously preserving your applications and data, and
translating as many personalized settings as possible. The process is
designed to be, and normally is, quite painless. That said, things can
go wrong, in a small number of cases. If your data is at all important
to you, back it up before proceeding.
The upgrade from WinXP Home to WinXP Pro, in particular, almost
always goes smoothly, as both operating systems use the same kernel.
