I've just wasted a lot of time trying to update (flash) the firmware
in my Teac CD-W524E CD writer, due to a bad mistake in the supplier's
instructions. If any other users end up googling to this post,
hopefully the following notes will help them avoid similar problems.

This page provides the program UpdaterW524E.exe that is supposed to do
the firmware flashing
http://www.zdnetindia.com/downloads/catinfo/2100.html

One of the files in the download package is this
http://www.teac.co.jp/dspd/download/firmware/cd-w524e/readme.html
which gives instructions on how to accomplish the upgrade.

Two key points are to disable Autoplay/Auto Insertion on the drive,
and disable DMA on the correct controller(changing it to PIO). And, of
course, re-enable these afterwards.

More vitally, if you presently have version A, B or C of the firmware,
you need to update it SUCCESSIVELY to each of the later levels, until
you get to the current latest level, version E. This is not easy. Half
way down the page are two crucial instructions, the first being:
"Please use FWUPW524E01.EXE in this Home Page to update to 1.0C."

IOW, find and download that other program, as UpdaterW524E.exe will
not get you from B to C. But at least that program does exist, and it
worked.

The next instruction is
"Please use FWUPW524E02.EXE in this Home Page to update to 1.0D."
IOW, once you are at version C, get this (third) program to update to
D. However, that program DOESN'T EXIST! Not on the site, not anywhere.

Instead, I eventually discovered (nervously) that you could (and
presumably SHOULD) use UpdaterW524E.exe for this step, as well as for
the final step from D to E.
