I'm new to photosharing over the internet. I've gotten tired of sending
large attachments to friends and relatives, and would like to place the
photos somewhere and then let them go look for themselves, and if they
want to, download digital copies (the same resolutions that I have, not
reduced). In other words, it would be a way to transfer digital photos
from me to them. Neither I nor they care about ordering prints or photo
editing tools. If we have the original digital files, we can do that.

I've been looking at places like Flickr, Yahoo Photos, Koday Easy Share,
Snapfish, Photobucket, Picasa, and Shutterfly. Kodak (Ofoto?) seems to
display the largest size pictures on their site, which is nice for
viewing, but I don't think even they work in such a way that I can use
their site to place original for others to download.

None of the sites give enough information, some more than others, and the
only way to see how they operate is to join. I also wonder how these
programs affect my pc. I think Kodak (or Picasa?) drops little thumbnail
or index files in every one of the photo folders it finds on my hard
drive, if I decide to let it search my hard drive.

Should I be looking at something like pBase? I don't mind paying
something reasonable.

TIA

Flickr is free with some limitations. If you like it you can pay $24.95
/ year and have the limitations removed. The main limitations are only
being able to easily access the last 200 photos you uploaded, seeing
them at a resolution no higher than 1024, being limited to three albums
(Flickr calls them sets), being limited to an upload bandwidth of 20mb
(no limit on download bandwidth) and seeing ads. If you pay the fee, you
can see all the photos up to the resolution you uploaded them, have as
many albums as you want, limited to 2GB of upload bandwidth and you
don't see any ads.

www.pbase.com

You can upload the full res original to your heart's content...at a
reasonable price...and it will automatically create large/medium/small
versions of it so that on-line viewing is easier.

Dropload is free, and applies to all files, not just photos. You upload the
file(s) and they inform your friends, who can then download them within a
set time period, after which they will be deleted.

I had two hostingservices on my shortlist: Flickr and Pbase.

Flickr gives you two options. A "free" account and a "pro"
account. The first one is really free, the "pro" costs $25/year.

A free account at Flickr let you store and share images up to 5 Mb
(and 1024 px at the longest side). For a "pro" account the upper
limit is 10 Mb/image.

As long as you keep under these limits, your original will not be
recompressed and your friends can view or download it.

Flickr will automatically create thumbnails at various sizes.
These are overcompressed and generally bad.

The monthly upload limit bendwith is 20 Mb with the free account.
With the "pro" account the monthly limit limit is 2 GB.

With the free acount, only your 200 most recent photos will be visible
- there is no such restriction on the "pro" account.

The greatest limitation with a free acoount at Flickr is that you can
only have three "sets" (or galleries) at any one time. If you want to
use Flickr for sharing with friends, you will probably like to have
one "set" for each event, trip, celebration, whatever. The "pro"
account lets you have as many sets as you like.

Neither Flickr nor Pbase will touch your drive.

Pbase is also nice and I considered it as an alternative to Flickr
(but ended up with a free account on Flickr because the price was
right for me :-).

Pbase has a cleaner interface, let you customize the look of your
"galleries" and is quicker to load than Flickr (which appear to be
heaviliy loaded sometimes). Also, I don't think they put any
limitations on the number of galleries (sets) you have under your
account. Pbase will charge you $23/year for 400 Mb (and more if
you need more space). No free account, but a 30 day free trial
period.

The limitations that comes with a free Flickr account may be
inconvenient if your main objective is sharing. If you end
up with a "for pay" account both places costs about the same,
and it is up to you if you prefer the more playful community
of Flickr, or the no-nonsense "image-is-king" approach of
Pbase.

I have more than 7,000 images in various file sizes, and a few videos,
on Fototime.com.

You can allow access to one image by URL, or albums of images.

There is a print service (photo club, I think), and other services.

Everything has been very good or better during the nearly three years
I've used them

Hi Jeff!

www.fotopic.net is worth considering. 250 MB of free space and no
restrictions on size that I know of (I have 5 MP pics there in
fullsize), although I think they do tend to recompress the images.
Another neat feature is that you can pick your own url for the gallery:
http://<pick any name>.fotopic.net
If anyone knows a website that allows one to store more pics I'd love
to hear about it.

I've been using Fotopic for 3 years now and have got about 1000 images

free up to the 250MB limit, plus more space can be purchased for a nominal
amount is desired.

I designed ourdoings.com for sharing with friends and relatives, by
people who don't have a lot of time for organizing, at full resolution
if you wish. There's an email update feature that sends HTML-formatted
mail with thumbnails, attachment-free.

Sites that accept uploads of zip files (at least pbase and
ourdoings.com, likely others) do not require you to install software on
your computers. I do have some non-invasive batch files and a Unix
script that can be used to shrink and pack photos for upload.

Good thinking. He who holds the purse pulls the strings. If
advertising is the business model, the site will cater to advertisers
over users.

My site is guilty of you have to join to see how they operate, but you
don't have to provide any credit card, etc. for the first 7 days. I am
designing a demo. Here's the rough draft:

ourdoings.com is for you if

o Your digital photos tell a story.
o You can find them on your computer.
o You want to share them.
o You are considerate of people you share with.
o You want to spend little time organizing.

You don't have to make such a zip file now. We have stock photos for

the form below. You can also upload a single JPEG file, or just leave
the form below blank.
