I think the drive is OK as I can mount regular commercial CD's with
data but not blank media. I tried a few blank disks. The CD's don't
show in the finder windows, and it's not set to ignore. The dialog box
came up asking me how I wanted to proceed so I know it knows it's
there. The disk utility doesn't see it either. Is there system software
that comes with the MAC to do this, or is it automatic? Any ideas?

this happened to me also-but it was on my HP and i called the cust.service and after running a buncha tests, they concluded that the drive was bad and needed to be replaced..so they sent me a new one...
