Trying to get this @$##@# thing working
will not Except a WD Hardrive and I trued updating the Flash too regarding
it..... this model will no except the Harddrive.... might it be a good Idea
to use a Drive that you know it likes to Store the Updaters and flash stuff?

The old boxes had limitations on the size of the hard drive you could use in
them. It could be your drive is too large for the system. Drive
manufacturer may have a work around on their website that will alter the
boot sector of the drive thus tricking the mobo into thinking its smaller
than it really is, but the operating system still sees its true size. I ran
into this with an P2 350 system. It also required an additional jumper on
the drive being installed. That little life saving clue was burried in the
documentation, that I didn't read, that came with the drive. It was 120gig
Western Digital. Hours later, after much knashing of teeth, I read the
instructions and got it going.
See if you can borrow an old drive that's smaller than 2 gigs somewhere.
All the old P2's will see it if they are working ok. Your drive could be
toast, too. |

i thought w/d's insisted on no jumpers at all to be the master....?Anyhow,do
you mean the machine wont accept the drive or it wont boot?compaqs(or at
least most of them)look for a hidden diagnostics partition on the hard
drive.try getting the compaq diagnostics boot floppy and try with that(the
hard drive must be fdisked but not formatted)and the floppy puts the diag
partition on.Look it up on the hp/compaq website.Please let us know how you
go on.

Nope, in this case, it took 2 jumpers to make it work. One up and down like
usual, and the other one jumped two pins horizontally. It's been a while so
I don't remember which pins were involved. It was the original 120gig WD
with 2 meg cache.
