I have a DELL GX1 pc and a Compaq Desktop pc(model unknown).

Can anyone tell me how to get info so I can find drivers for these
systems, and also explore my upgrade options?

Both companys obviously don't want the consumers who buy their
machines to have important upgrade info about the systems, which is
why it is so difficult to do anything with these mnachines once they
are out of warrantee.

But if one cannot get the component info, then how can one upgrade or
find drivers?

This is a big reason I would never buy one of their systems firsthand.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks a lot.

This program may not be exactly what you're looking for but it's a good
start.

Well, the FIRST thing to do is to get that Compaq model number, and
check their site. Also Dell's site for teh GX1.

As to upgrade options - again, first stop is the manufacturer's web
sites.

Then it's a matter of what upgrade you want to do. Bigger HD? Use
an ATA host adapter and the major problem in BIOSes is solved.

More RAM? Check with Crucial.COM for the RAM.

Faster video? If it's plugged in, then a matching video board
(interface wise) to the current one.

If it's on the motherboard, then usually you're out of luck.

New motherboard? Well, THAT'S a laugh ...

Faster processor? Usually not worth the money - very few will take
a 2x to 3x faster processor.

Why so? Do remember that they're probably very proprietory, and the
original purchased really WANTED a "bread box" computer, else they wouldn't
have purchased a Dell or Compaq.

AIDA32 works a treat for some of it. Eyeball Mark II works great
also (hint: The two Eyeballs are either side of your nose ...)

Oh, I dunno - for an "applicance" they can be pretty darn good.
It's when you expect to pop the hood and fiddle with it ...
