I am cleaning up my old G6-200 for my parents, so I wanted to start
fresh. Yesterday I used EZ Drive to reformat both the 8G (Western
Digital) & 3G drives (as I have done in the past with no problems)I
then installed W95 and then upgraded to W98.
Everything was working fine last night, but this morning when I went
to install the sound card drivers, I kept getting error messages (the
earlier ones, I did not take note of) and it kept asking to restart so
the registry could be repaired, it restarts and comes back with the
same message. I finally got p***ed off and started all over again
with the reformat, and now I get the SU-0013 error.
So far, I have searched to find a repair online to no avail. I have
disabled the Floppy Boot Protection in EZ Drive, I have reformatted
with FAT16, I tried directly installing W98 and I get the same
message. I still can't figure out what the elves did during the
night.

Download Data Lifeguard and make the boot/test floppy. Do a full drive
scan - it sounds like there's a high probability the drive is failing.

Marilyn,
The following URL in the Micro$oft support forum gives one explanation for an
SU0013 error:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=188166
The error condition described here indicates that Windows is confused by the
disk partitioning information.
I suggest that you go back and start from scratch, but DO NOT use WD's EZ Drive
to set up the hard drive. EZ Drive creates a unique boot loader and "drive
overlay" software.
As I have stated many times in this newsgroup and elsewhere, although well
intended, EZ Drive and similar free software products from hard drive
manufacturers can create problems when installing or upgrading new software
releases. Use only when necessary.
The G6-200 system is well capable of handling both 8GB and 3GB disk drives on
its own without software assistance from EZ Drive. In other words, EZ Drive is
not necessary at all.
I forget whether or not the G6-200 is capable of booting direct from a CD. If
not, go to www.bootdisk.com , download the Windows 98 boot disk image, make a
boot diskette. Either way, run FDISK from the DOS prompt, delete all
partitions, create a single 8GB FAT32 partition. (As an alternative, if you
need to install Windows 95, and it is the earlier junk original Windows 95A
release lacking FAT32 support, set up one 2GB FAT16 partition.) Now format the
partition with the DOS FORMAT command, then install.
The important thing here is to remove all old partitions which may well be
marked as special by EZ Drive. If the Windows 98 CD you have is the "Upgrade"
version, you will need to install WIndows 95 first, then upgrade. If the
Windows 98 CD is intended to be used for a clean install, then you can skip the
Windows 95 install. (Micro$oft did different versions of Windows to protect
itself from all the software pirates that keep Microsoft from maximizing its
financial potential, hence the "upgrade" and "clean install", called OEM,
versions. Most of us try to make decisions to do things simply and easily.
Whenever given the choice, whether in technology or marketing, Microsoft
invariably chooses the most complicated solutions, which explains in part why
the software world is so scr**ed up today.)
Sorry for the rant. That's just the way things are... Ben Myers

Thanks for the help. I did do everything as you said, avoiding the EZ
Drive, and it seems to have worked. It seemed kind of bizarre that
this would have happened, since I have formatted this machine before
using EZ Drive and had no problems, it ran like a top. I guess I just
wasn't holding my tongue right this time.
Thanks again,
Marilyn |
