I have a 700XL that is 11 months old. I am running Windows XP Home.

I often back up the My Documents folder onto to DVD-RAM. I use Windows
Explorer to do it. This time I got a message that there was a CRC error
during the write. I can no longer access anything on the DVD. When I try to
use Windows Explorer it says the "disk is not accessible, insert a disk."
When I try to eject the disk, I get a message saying "the disk is not
formatted, Format Now?"

Any idea what's going on?

I can access a DVD-R.

Thanks, Allen

Try another disc - sounds like this one has gone bad.

So you think it's the disk, not the drive itself?

Does a disk just sometimes die after being written to 10 or 15 times?
If so, I guess I should always back up my documents to more than one disk. I
haven't been doing that.

Thanks, Allen

I had a similar problem with a CD-RW that I was using as a floppy disk (drag
and drop) then one day the disk would not mount and windows would not see
the disk. I lost everything. I tried another disk and formatted it to act
like a floppy disk and a few months later that disk stopped working. Now my
RW drive will not recognize any CD-RW's. I do not think RW disks CD or DVD
are reliable enough to act as a floppy diskette.

Ed

BTW- is my CD burner dying. I can still burn CDR's but CDRW I can only burn
the once and the drive will not see the disk once ejected.

-thanks

Well yes and no

Although a RW can be written to many times over it is the file allocation
table that is accessed the most when the disk is used like a floppy. When
the file table can not be read the disk becomes useless. This is what
happened to me with my CD-RW. I asked a computer guy at work he said that a
RW will produce errors after re-written to about 25 times. After hearing
this I started using my CD-RW's like CD-R's. I would write all the files to
the disk at once. When I wanted to add more files I would copy the files on
the CD-RW to the hard drive, completely erase the disk and then copy the old
and new files back to the CD-RW. This worked allot better for a while until
my CD burner started acting up. Now I can not mount a RW disk once I burn
it.
