|

Hi
The other day my gf gave me her Gateway Solo 5300, 800MHz PIII laptop
with 128MB to fix since it refused to work without the AC adaptor
plugged in anymore. Well, after I plugged the laptop in I
deliberately unplugged the adaptor to see if the battery would hold a
charge, but it didn't and the laptop shut off. Then I decided to just
leave the laptop plugged into the outlet via a powerstrip overnight to
see if it's battery would recharge. The next day I tried to see if
the battery would function again, but it didn't. I assume that the
battery is dead. She got this laptop back in early 2001, and it
originally came preloaded with Windows ME (which I later reformatted
and upgraded to Win2k Pro). Since it's not quite 3 years that it was
purchased, it should be still under warranty. Would a battery
replacement solve the recharge problem? Would a replacement battery
be covered free under the warranty? Or would a new replacement
battery cost as if the warranty doesn't apply?
And another question, I'm looking for software (freeware preferably)
that would block popups and spyware since she complained about that
because she thinks it could be related to her mediacom internet
service. |

A battery of three years likely needs replacing. Rarely are they covered
for three years - even with a 3-year warranty, one year on the battery is
the most common.

Free popup stopper. You'll need to hold keys to allow some popups to come
thru.
