I was going to buy a astro from a friend for my son but my son said it
wouldn't be a good idea because he wouldn't be able to put his music
on cds? is this true? I can get this computer which looks to do much
of what a thirteen year should need to do for little to nothing but if
it isn't going to work maybe I should look elsewhere?

Look elsewhere - the Astro is effectively an appliance, very limited in
upgradeability (even the OS is largely restricted to the now-obsolete
Windows 98).

If you want an all-in-one that's easy to use, an iMac is a better choice.

My friend has a Gateway Astro (which I bought new for her, for better or
worse, a little over three years ago). It's not a fast computer but it will
accept an external USB CD burner. I bought a TDK one for her back in
April--it's slow, but works well enough for her--she seems pleased.

The Astro is a very slow computer, and is limited in its expandability--it
only accepts USB peripherals.

I've maintained a couple of Astros bought by a public library client for use in
the childrens' room.

The Astro is anything but a screamer and quite limited. If you are willing to
do a very careful and slightly complicated disassembly and reassembly of the
computer, a CD burner to replace the original CD-ROM drive is the least
expensive solution. I would not pay more than $50 for an Astro, and only then
with all the original documentation and software licenses. The other thing to
do with the Astro is to max out the system memory.

There may be better alternatives out there in the surplus/used computer market.
If you are located in Central Massachusetts, send me an email or give me a call.
We have some modestly priced systems which are much more maintainable and
expandable than the Astro for modest prices... Ben
