I have several computers in my house including my old GP6-450 and
awaiting my new 710XL. I do have a router with 3 LAN ports and 1
wireless port (SMC7004AWBR). I would like to attach 1 good color
printer to the network, but the router is in an inconvenient place
physically to use the built in print server.

Are there good reasonably priced color injet printers that can just
connect to a wired port (ethernet) and not require dedicated printer
server that any PC can just print from?

Bob

It depends on what you consider "reasonably priced" - it's going to be tough
for find a sub-$200 printer with a built in print server. Epson has a few
of them starting at about $250 - with many, you'll find that you need a
print server card that will add at least $100 to the cost of the printer.

If you have a serviceable printer, you might want to get a dedicated
wireless print server or bridge -- you should be able to find one for about
what a wireless card for a new printer would cost ($100-150).

Bob,

One solution would be to attach whatever color inkjet you have to the computer
which is the most convenient as a place for people to get their printed info.
The downside is that whichever computer has the printer attached is the one that
MUST be powered on for everyone else to print. Depending on which model of
printer you have, you may have to fuss around a bit to get it working as a
shared printer.

Color inkjet printers which HP considers to be networkable like the 1200C series
(whatever the current model number is now) run in the $500 range including an
external JetDirect print server box. Epson, Canon, Lexmark are all priced
somewhat similarly.

The cheaper inkjet printers may prove to be a major struggle to get up and
running no matter what sort of device you choose to network them, either wired
or wireless... Ben Myers

Bob,

I have a similar SMC wireless router connecting four desktops and two
laptops...some wireless and some wired...with OS ranging from Win95a
to WinXP Pro....and one printer. The printer is connected to the Win95
desktop. I installed the HP 722C printer drivers on three Win98 systems
and set them up for a network printer connection. The two XP systems
found the network printer on their own and set up the proper connection.
So I've been able to print from each of the different systems with no problem
....without a print server.
