|
|
Greetings,
I answered an ad to purchase a used Gateway E4200. When I went to check
out the machine the seller told me it froze up when you tried to use the
CD-ROM.
Being the curious twat that I am, I put a CD in the drive and sure
'nuff, it locked right up and I had to take the CD out and reboot the
machine to get it to work again.
I couldn't find any conflicts in device manager and my expertise in
these matters doesn't go any further than that. Any ideas on what might
be causing this?
Thanks,
Al |

Al,
My first guess is that the CD-ROM drive itself has failed.
You could also open up the case and make sure that it is cabled and jumpered
correctly, then check the motherboard BIOS (F1 key for setup) to make sure that
the drive is properly recognized by the motherboard.
At the software level, remove any and all DOS-mode references to the CD-ROM
drive in CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT. (Rather than remove them, run MSCONFIG
and simply insert REM and a blank space in front of the text lines that refer to
the DOS mode CD-ROM driver in CONFIG.SYS and MSCDEX in AUTOEXEC.BAT.
While you're at it, make sure that there are no old-style memory managers left
over from a previous DOS install (highly unlikely).
Then go to Control Panel, double-click the System icon, click the Device Manager
tab, then click the + in front of the entry that says CDROM. You will see the
make and model of the CD-ROM drive displayed. Highlight it, then click the
Properties button, then the Settings tab. Make sure that the DMA and Auto
insert notification checkboxes are NOT checked. These are the least agressive
settings for a CD-ROM drive.
If, after having tried all this, the system still locks up, replace the CD-ROM
drive, or, better yet, maybe install a CD-RW burner, which would also enable you
to burn CDs... Ben Myers

Is it a CD-ROM, or a CD writer - and if the latter, is DirectCD loaded?
