hello,
g6-p350 (xs ram) outOfWarranty running win95B (since 6/99)
gradually is getting more and more noisy (similar to a car with the idle
turned way up)
(noise is constant whether i am using it or not -- i.e. no change when
saving data / using it)
fans seem to be ok and no more errors than usual -- runs well
just wonder whether this is a prelude to something major (ex: hd / psu
failure)
THANKS |

Tanya,
The noise is most likely coming from the power supply, with the cooling fan on
the processor as the next most likely possibility. Of course, if the noise is
from the hard drive, it would be a sign that a bearing on the hard drive is
wearing out.
Steps to take to figure out the source of noise and take corrective action:
1. Open up the chassis, removing the side panel.
2. Power up the computer. It will run just fine with the panel removed.
3. Put your best ear near the chassis. You will probably be able to hear
exactly where the noise is coming from.
4. If you have never opened up the chassis, there are probably a lot of dust
bunnies inside, and they may be causing the fan(s) to make the noise.
5. If the fans are the noisy critters, get a can of compressed air (usually $5
or $6 in Staples, OfficeMax, CompUSA, Wal*Mart), take the computer outside (not
in a rain or snowstorm), and blast air repeatedly into the power supply,
processor fan, and all nooks and crannies. First, remove by hand any
accumulated dirt from the bottom of the case or clumped up elsewhere.
6. If the hard disk is the noisy one, you have a decision to make as to whether
the data on the drive is worth spending the money to recover. If so, then a
competent computer service provider can replace the hard drive and copy all of
your programs and data before the drive bites the dust forever. If you are
within maybe 25 mi of Harvard MA, hard drive replacement and an exact copy of
your current hard drive is a service we perform routinely at a fair price for
local clients.
But first, get a Philips head screwdriver, open up the case and figure out the
cause of the noise... Ben Myers
