My G6-400 suffered a meltdown of the hard drive forcing a complete reinstall
of all software and I cannot get the sound driver to load. The one on the
System Recovery disk fails with a "missing file a3d.dll" file error. (That
file is on the CD but can't be loaded for some reason.)
A check of the Gateway download site came up with an upgrade which seems to
be correct i.e. it matches both description of the "sound card" and my
motherboard. It too fails, this time with a "missing file eapci4m.ecw"
which is not included in the download.
Gateway's "update" software referred me to another driver with disasterous
results and had to be deinstalled.
I am running Win98SE; all other drivers loaded ok and the sound worked fine
until the hard drive problem occurred.
Has anyone had a similar experience or can provide any suggestions as to
next move. (I have referred it to Gateway Tech Support but thought the
group might have some insites.)
TIA

I would go to the manufacturer of the sound cards site and see if they
have a update/driver.

Good news! Gateway provided me with the info necessary to locate the
drivers on the System Recovery disk. By copying them to the hard drive and
forcing the system to look at them there the install went correctly. There
must have been some minor change between Win98 and Win98SE which conflicted
with the recovery disk scenero.

Better news! You are better off with Windows 98SE, perhaps the most stable
release ever of the DOS-based Windows products.
As another posting stated, you can almost always get device drivers for most any
device directly from the chip manufacturer. If your G6-400 has integrated sound
on the motherboard, www.intel.com has audio drivers... Ben Myers
