I replaced board #4000402 running PIII 1000MHZ 512megs for about two years
with board #4000472.

The motherboard functioned as expected through the boot post utill it was
about to enter Windows XP. At that point I got error message " system
32\Driver\pci.sys missing or corrupt". and the computer hangs.

When I try to boot from the Windows Setup Disk I alternatively get the
following messages:

"The file pci.sys is corrupted"
"File setupdd.sys could not be loaded error code 4"
"File ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded, error code 7"
"Setup is loading files (kernell Debugger.dll)" The computer hangs.

I would appreciate any help the group can give.

Thanks
Eustace

Not all these boards will support a 1 GHz CPU - it sounds like despite the
higher part number, the replacement board is an older revision that won't
support a Coppermine processor (i.e., you can use only Katmai processors up
to a 600 MHz PIII).

The CPU the memory showed up OK both in the post at boot up and in the BIOS
it is only as it boots into the operating system that I get these problems.

Thanks for your comment nonetheless.

You can try reinstalling XP, but if this is a board that doesn't support
Coppermine processors, what you're seeing could be a direct result. The
Coppermine CPUs have a set of instructions that the OS may attempt to use,
but which won't work properly if the BIOS doesn't support them.
