Got the box pretty much for parts, but the box was just missing an
optical drive (most likely a CD-RW), and the hard drive.
I first turned it on, and the computer would display the standard
NVIDIA stuff before the big Gateway splash logo.
That's where it hangs, and it has done so for 5 minutes at the
longest.
I've replicated this condition while the keyboard was (and wasn't)
plugged in. I've also replicated the condition plugging in either a
(working) hard drive and/or a CD-ROM.
I've also replaced the CMOS battery and cleared the CMOS by switching
the jumper.
I'm not sure what my motherboard model is exactly, and I'm not sure
what other information I would need to examine other possibilities.
What else can I try? (I'll also call the original owner to find out
more). |

Maybe you could try getting into the BIOS and resetting the settings to the
default settings. Make sure the drives are being seen in the BIOS and check
the boot order.

Check the board for faulty capacitors (leaking and/or bulging caps near the
CPU and/or AGP slot). That is one known issue with many of these systems.
If the caps look OK, the next thing to try is replacing the video card - the
failure rate on many of the nVidia cards of this age is quite high.
