I have Win98 (First Edition) on my system. Last night, I
got caught up on installing "critical" update files from Windows
Update, including Oct 2003 Patch for IE6, SP1, Virtual Machine,
Direct 9.0b, etc. Now I notice that all my desktop shortcuts
have the "shorcut arrows". I uninstalled and reinstalled
Tweak UI, but I still can't get rid of those pesky shortcut
arrows. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Scott

Solution. I did a search on "shortcut arrows" and tried this
registry change:
-----------
If u want to remove those ugly arrows go to
Start>>Run>>Regedit and

Open the Key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
Open the Key "LNKFILE"
Delete the value "IsShortcut" (in right pane)
Open the next Key "PIFFILE" (in right pane)
Delete the value "IsShortcut"
Restart the windows
----------
That did the trick. No more arrows.

Known issue... The q313829 critical update overwrites your existing
shell32.dll file. You need to restore that file with the original
which, by the way, will not effect the purpose of the update that
changed it out.

Goto Start/Run/SFC

Choose "Extract one file from installation disk"

Enter shell32.dll

Specify the path to the folder holding all the CAB files (SFC should
already know the path to the CAB files but if it doesn't, then just
browse to it). There is no need to specifying which CAB file it is in
because SFC will search in them all in the folder.

Shell32.dll should be restored to the C:\Windows\System folder.

Thomas

T.R.,

Actually, the registry change described above solved the problem. I
check out "shall32.dll", and it's dated 12-6-2001. Being two years
old, does it sound like it was not overwritten by the update?

Thanks!

The Tweak UI Powertoys Guide I got the Shell32.dll fix out of also
showed the registry method also. I just always opt for any
non-registry-editing method offered when more than one method is
offered which in this case there were three methods offered as the
fix.

There was something else on this NG a couple of years back where I
shared a known registry fix with a user and they totally scr**ed up
their registry while doing the simple edit and I felt bad that I had
even brought it up. So I always stay away from offering registry
fixes.

Anyway, glad you got it fixed.

Mine is dated back to 11-04-99 on the 98SE machine which is the OS
this problem pops up in.

There is a great Tweak UI Powertoys Guide put out by PCforrest.
According to that guide, there are a lot of little flukes that come up
with the combination of TweakUI and 98SE updates/fixes. You came
across one of them.

Anyway... problem fixed....

T.R.,

Yes, I would have tried the Shell32.dll fix had the registry fix not
worked out. I've done a number of registry tweaks over the years,
with good results. However, I always back up the current registry,
plus do a Cfgback and ERU Backup, because one of these times
I'm know I'm going to screw something up. And, I've always found
Tweak UI to work properly, until now.

By the way, I have a Win95 a system with something not quite right
in the registry. View-Details doesn't seem to stick. It usually reverts
to View-List display the next time the folder is opened, even though
TweakUI is set up to "save windows settings." Is there some kind
of registry repair that can rectify this quirk? (I'm still using the original
Win95 install from 1997...and the system runs perfectly otherwise.
Yes, I know, hard to believe.

Thanks again,
Scott
