I has an 80GB hard drive under my computer it reads 76.3GB but under
Partition Magic it reads 78.1GB. Why the difference and how do I solve it.

Thanks,

Ron

It's all in the way you do the math. Once all the file allocation tables are
set up on the drive, nearly 2GB gets taken away from the original 80GB.

Partition Magic does its math using the usual 1000 and 1000000 which we humans
use.

Microsoft is true to its geekish heritage, using 1K (1024) and 1M (1024 x 1024)
to tell you how much space is on the drive... Ben Myers

There is no solution. There are different ways to define a gigabyte -- the
drive makers use a decimal definition (1 decimal gigabyte is 10^9 bytes),
while the operating system uses a binary definition (1 binary Gbyte is 2^30
bytes).

An 80 decimal gigabyte drive is about 75 binary gigabytes. I'm not sure
what Partition Magic is using -- it could be the formatted capacity in
decimal gigabytes, particularly if you're using FAT32 as your filesystem.

Ben & Ed,

Thanks for the information, though I am still puzzeled as the drive read
the same 78.1 with Windows and Partition Magic prior to the last format.
