I have recently acquired a Quantum Fireball lct10 30Gb hard drive (which
apparently came from a TiVo) that I would like to use in a Gateway
Essential 500 running Windows 2000. I upgraded the BIOS (PhoenixBIOS 4.0
rel. 6.0) to 4W4SB0X0.15A.0019.P14 (the latest I could find), but the hard
drive still reads as being 10Gb. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Are you sure it's a 30 GByte drive? That BIOS should have no problem
reading a drive up to 120 GBytes in size.

Has it been erased (the TiVo system may have something to do with the low
capacity reading)?

You will need to start from scratch with that drive. Begin with fdisk.

I would RMA it back to Maxtor before it dies on ya.
Had two Lct drive go out on me.
The Board over heats and it just flips out and doesn't work anymore.

That is a common fault of one chip on these drives, but since it came with a
TiVo, Maxtor
will not warrant it to the end user - if it fails, it would have to go back
to the company that built the hard disc recorder.

Thanks, guys. Actually, after yet more research, I discovered Maxtor's
MaxBlast3 hard drive utility, which seems to have resolved the problem (so
far). Also thanks for the heads-up on the drive's reliability (or lack
thereof). Hopefully that won't become an issue.
