ok I jumped a little in my room and one of my two computers died. yep it
just stopped and wont' start anymore. The cpu and psu fans don't even come
up. So assuming my hds are safe, it's either the motherboard or psu. Is it
possible for the psu fan to not even run if the motherboard is dead? |

Check the switch on the back, the power connector into the machine, make
sure the wall outlet has power, etc.

Sure. When you "turn on" your computer, you don't turn the power supply,
you turn on the motherboard. The motherboard is connected to the power
supply. With any luck, you merely have to reattach (reseat) the power
connector from the power supply to the motherboard. |

I had the same problem when I was 12 I was playing Xena witha a friend and
kinda tripped over the extension power lead and wiped out the monitor with a
surge 
Pull the power supply out of the other computer and hook it up and see if it
works. If not, it's probably the motherboard.

Do you guys have fuses in the plugs that connect to the wall socket,
like in Ireland and UK. Just a thought!

........ thats the green and any black wire. i had todo the same thing to a
mates PC just 2 days ago. PSU died. on mates PSU (an old cheap PSU) the
green wire was slightly smaller diameter than the others.

AT: Yes, the fan will run regardless of the state of the motherboard.
ATX: The PS requires the motherboard. You can jumper pins 14 and 15
(PS_ON, GND) on your supply's ATX connector to start the PS without it
being connected to a motherboard. You will see the fans spin.
I suggest you play jump 'n' run outdoors from now on. :-)

If you have tried all the (valid) suggestions and it is still dead then it
is almost certainly the PSU. An ATX power supply is about £25 from PC World.
By the way, there is usually a fuse inside the PSU too but make sure you
UNPLUG before going inside.

This is a good way to destroy some power supplies. They really ought
to be tested under load. You can buy "ATX Power Supply Testers" that

describe, plus some power resistors so you don't blow the supply.

Power supplies have regulators that accomodate varying loads, including
none. Having no load will not destroy a power supply. OTOH, to adequately
test a power supply a load is needed. You can use any old mother board.
But if you want to get picky, I suggest you look at the power supply pins
with a 'scope to see if they have any ripple. |

Ditto. GF's PC stopped listening to the power switch and would not turn on.
I grounded the "TURN THE POWER ON" command line and we just leave it on at
all times now. |
