Has anyone tried getting around a a broken heatsink tab on a CPU
socket by plugging another socket into it?

I haven't broken any tabs (yet), but I'm thinking of just in case.

462 pins, like Amp #916788-4, but who sells them cheap and in small
quantities? One place wants just $10, but I have to buy at least 125.

No, but wouldn't the 'step' on the lower socket prevent the upper one
from seating properly? And would you want to trust the lower ZIF socket
to hold the combined weight of the upper socket, CPU and heatsink,
particularly if the board is mounted vertically?

Get a decent CPU cooler whose clip uses all 3 tabs?

Drat! frown And the longest pins I can find are only 0.11", probably
too short to both grip the socket holes and clear the step.

Yes, if my only choices were that or some homemade fix for the broken
tab.

That's what I have, but I still don't like it as much as the Pentium 4
heatsink mounting.

Maybe you aren't looking far enough ahead. You never know when you
might break 125 sockets in a row. :-)

The following might be worthwhile:

You will buying a new M/B before it breaks to upgrade your processor!
Everytime I buy a new processor, I have to upgrade my M/B because no matter
how "upgradeable" your current M/B may be it WILL NOT handle the new
processor you buy!
They change spec's more often than you change underwear!
Good Luck,
and seriously, I wouldn't worry about it. you can always buy one of those
coolers that use the holes in your M/B, (unless you don't have that kind of
M/B in which case.........YOU NEED A NEW M/B!!!!)

Yup, you can forget about buying something today for upgrading in the
future. It will all have to be changed. Buy something for here and
now not the future.

That would be every three years, but it means I'm always wearing
something green for St. Patrick's day.

No holes, and I just got it last month. OTOH it was just $60,
including retail Athlon XP1800+ with heatsink & fan.
