Hi,
I have a system with a WD2000JB and wanted to buy a second drive to ghost
to. I thought the WD1200JB ($106)
(http://www.googlegear.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=101205) would
make a nice companion but at GoogleGear's checkout it suggested I look at the
Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 6Y120P0 120GB Ultra ($108)
(http://www.googlegear.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=100703) . With
so little price difference I thought the Maxtor might be a good choice since
it is a newer release, is 133 MHz capable, and has fluid bearings. My question
is that perhaps the WD's will work better together having come form the same
manufacturer? I'm not necessarily thinking transfer rates would be affected
but maybe error correction protocols or other technical issues not readily
apparent could come into play.
Also, if I pair the Maxtor (133 MHz) with the WD2000JB (100 MHz) on the same
ribbon and channel will this tune the Maxtor down to 100 Mhz? If the Maxtor is
on a seperate channel with a DVD-ROM or CD-RW will it be able to operate at
133 MHz? Is there a noticable difference for say video editing?

Presumably they have better margins on that drive.

You can use whatever you want (except SATA's) as long as the destination
drive has enough space to hold the data on the source drive. I rotate two
20gb (IBM), one 40gb (WD BB), one 60gb (IBM), and an 80gb (WD BB)--and only
the older 20gb drives are noticeably slower than the others. They run about
800mb/min. while the others are usually in the 1000-1200 mb/min range, and
cloning takes place in only 10-15 min. since I keep my C: drive lean
(13-17gb).
Speed isn't an issue for me, as I run ghost and leave to do something else,
like mow the yard or fix breakfast. I do my clone operation on Saturday
morning and do a full disk clone, not an image. FWIW, I also move important
files (documents, database, etc.) that change frequently to my D: drive
which runs at all times. Because of potential issues with XP and clones--as
warned about on the Symantec site, et al--I remove the cloned drive before
booting into XP. All the four drives that are cloned are mounted in Mobil
Racks for quick removal.
