Does defragging a drive, which actually is a RAID 0 setup consisting
of two HDDs, work? I defragged last week my RAID 0 drive and
basically things got ugly after that - Windows files corrupted, BIOS
changed, etc.

I have never had a problem doing so, maybe I have been lucky.
However, though the speed is nice I have found it much safer to leave
the OS on a single drive, saving the stripe set for aplications etc that
actually need it. |

Telcontar,
Well, probably a bad experience. It was PerfectDisk's defragger that
sent my system down the tubes. It seemed a big co-incidence that was
the last thing I did before it was hosed.
Yes, I've been debating whether to continue using the RAID 0 or not.
It is a worry that if one drive goes down, it tugs the other drive
with it and I'm purely at the mercy of a backup. Tell me, is the
performance *that good* compared to a non-RAID setup?

In my Opinion yes, performance is that good. However, I do not think
that the OS itself benefits from it that much. At most, having the page
file on a stripe set helps, all having the OS reside there does is speed
boot time.
If you do any video cature or editing you will se a huge increase in
performance using the stripe. Basically any application that makes
frequent use of large data transfers will see a marked improvement.
I set myself up with a single drive to boot the OS, and has the
standard office apps etc on it, then I set up a stripe set, and mounted
it into a folder on the boot drive so that it appears the system only
has one drive. I use the stripe strictly for capture and editing purposes. |

As another poster has said, for big file transfers like editing and saving/retrieving large scans from medium format photographs it |
makes the system much more pleasant to use. To check that I really was seeing a big performance hike, I ran the SiSift 'Sandra'
'file system' benchmark on it and it left the conventional IDE system drive standing.
