Jupiter, in America, having pride in your country is not considered

absurd and narrow minded really.
If I lived in Canada, I would say I lived in Canada, not America. If I

"many in America consider it an insult when someone asks what is America"
That is not pride to be insulted when someone asks such a question, it is
narrow minded to think those in one country are the only ones referred when
"America" is mentioned since America consists of many countries in multiple
continents.
Your assumption seems to be that I have little experience in the USA, when
in fact, mine may be greater than yours unless you are past middle aged.
Most I know in the US (a great many) do not assume America is the USA, but
the narrow minded or uneducated I meet often do.
I meet very few in the US that say they live in America, The overwhelming
majority state "USA" or "United States" and sometimes "United States of
America". That also goes for US citizens I have met in other countries.
What assumption do you feel I made?

You wish to make it seem as if people who live in the United States have
no right to call themselves Americans. As if to do so would be out of
line and incorrect. You seem to believe or wish to perpetrate the myth
that people who live in the United States have never simply called
themselves Americans. Or if they have, it was and is only the dullards
and illiterate imbeciles that would dare ever call themselves Americans
if they live in the United States. You are wrong. You don't know what
you speak of.
If you were being truthful, you could ask anyone in the world what group
of people they think of when someone is called an American and there
would pretty much be only one answer. The answer would be the people
who live in the United States are called Americans. I mean really, why
would you pursue this matter any further Jupiter. You are clearly not
in touch with Americans.

Your assumption that only the uneducated people in the United States

shows you are more than likely an elitist that has contempt for everyday
people in America that are the cogs in the wheel that make it turn. To
call people who live in the United States who call themselves American
uneducated and ignorant smacks of "let them eat cake". You are not in

There is a difference between saying where you live and what you are. I
would not say I am a United Statesian. If someone asks us what we are

yourself more intelligent than most Americans, you don't represent it

And if you remember, the crux of this conversation revolved around the
fact that you made out as if you didn't understand what I meant when I
said I was from America. Simply because you consider yourself the
intelligentsia and anyone who calls themself American is ignorant is of
little concern to most Americans. We do not live to satisfy the ideals
of how others think we should identify ourselves. Why? Because we are
Americans and we call ourselves what we wish because this is our choice

You say that you have more experience in America than I do because you

With none of the meanings, according to the great U.K. expert on the
United States that has more experience and knows more about America than
most of its own citizens, having anything whatsoever to do with the
people who live in the United States.

You should really make up your mind Jupiter. Here is your quote:
| Quote: | Your assumption seems to be that I have little experience in the USA, when
in fact, mine may be greater than yours unless you are past middle aged.
|
Are you trying to convince me now that I should interpret the above
statement as meaning that you have more experience with people from
America? You clearly state above that you have more experience than I
"IN" the United States.
| Quote: | Your seem to have more assumptions in this post of yours.
|
As do you Jupiter, and you are also developing a pattern of changing
things to fit your argument when it is clearly not what you originally
had to say. As the above quote proves.

Jim,
There is nothing wrong with a little bit of side banter every now and
then. Nobody is being insulting to anyone else. No curse words are
being used. No defamation of character as in many groups.
This is not a moderated group. Anyone that finds this thread boring or
not to their liking is not being forced to read it. You can choose not
to do so. This is not Europe or the Middle East, the newsgroup is not
controlled by fascists or dictators. Neither is it controlled by people
who wish that only things that they approve of to be discussed.
This newsgroup is more like America, free. Kind of like the spirit that
Usenet was originally developed in. The spirit of the freedom to
express your ideas. Americans made this possible also, Americans
created Usenet.
I understand that this is a tech help group. Mostly, that is all that
occurs in this group.
Every now and then a little detour from the mundane can help breathe
life into a group and keep it from stagnating also.
It is just one thread, nobody is trying to take over the group. Relax.

I agree, I say that I live in the USA. As far as being "American", I
used to like what that represented a _whole lot more_ that what it
represents today.
I am one of the millions of Americans who cannot believe the direction
this country is headed in and the HUGE mistake we made going into
Iraq. Afganistan, sure -- that was brilliant, but we dropped the ball
in not pursuing Bin Laden further.
But there were no weapons of mass destruction. Colin Powell said that
was one of the lowest points of his entire career when he stood in
front of the UN basically with inaccurate information. I think that
they expected to find weapons of mass destruction, and were willing to
lie up front because they thought it would end up being true.
George Bush, in his state of the union address, gloated about how he
was going to save $14 billion dollars by cutting some programs over
the next few years. The Iraq war is now over $300 billion, and
nothing, absolutely nothing, compares to it. The U.S. is over $9
trillion in debt, trying to compete with emerging superpowers.
Oh -- he cut food stamps by $300 million leaving many who can't afford
food to go without. And he cut section 8 housing for the hundreds of
thousands of people on the welfare part of disability who get between
$600 and $800 a month, simply because of factors that leave them
disabled. Now there are homeless people on the streets (or 6 feet
under if they choose that as the lesser of two evils) because of it.
I hardly ever encounter anyone like Alt. While there are a lot of
people like that, they are a very rare breed.
I gave away my American flag, because it doesn't represent what it did
when I bought it. If the U.S. values change and we are moving in the
right direction again, then I will gladly have pride in this country.
