I plan to do alot of video work (mostly encoding) and want to upgrade
my 700mhz TBird. I've been a supporter of AMD the underdog for quite
some time now. However, my research on CPU benchmarks shows that the
P4 (with its SSE) smokes even the Opteron when it comes to encoding.
Please, please convince me that I should stay with AMD. Thanks. |

Athlon XPs support SSE. The Opteron supports both SSE and SSE2. Same
performance for a lower price. It's a no-brainer.

That means a new motherboard too, yes? Have you looked at the NVIDIA
chipset boards? |

It is SSE2 that helps some video programs. The soon to released Athlon 64
supports SSE2. It will also run 64 bit X86-64 code as well as standard X86
32 bit code. They can be run side by side using a 64 bit operating system.
The processor can run 32 bit code with standard Windows. With 64 bit code,
the performance of the Athlon 64 should really be awesome.

It's SSE2 and yes a P4 is the better platform for video editing. I've tested
both personally and a P4 chips with the same rated speed as an AMD renders
clips in vegas video twice as fast.

Why? If you want to save money, buy an AMD but for your application it's the
wrong choice. Go ask in the rec.video groups and find out what those guys
say. Too many AMD zealots that never have done any editing here!
BTW I use and sell both platforms, just think in this type of use AMD's
aren't that great.

Have you ever done video editing or tested the two platforms doing it?

This is my compelling argument:
"Stick to AMD!!"

It looks like SSE2 (vs SSE) makes alot of difference. I will gladly
wait for the Athlon 64 now. Thanks alot for all your input! |

Another issue you have to consider is how it's SSE2 is implemented. If it
uses the same set of SSE2 instructions per clock cycle as a P4, given it's
going to be run at a lower clock cycle (i.e. opteron), SSE2 itself might
not help much. What makes an athon =stronger= for a given clock speed is it
performs more per clock cycle on non SSE2 apps.
Again your best chance of getting what works best for your application is to
ask people doing it and have actually compared the different platforms. The
guys at the rec.video will be able to tell you how well the AMD 64's are
when they come out which may or may not be good. Any guesses at this point
are just that.
I do know I hope they do kick intels butt at video editing cause that means
lower rendering time for me! I'm not a fan of either, just buy what works
best for my apps at the time. I see no reason for me to use a lower
performing computer just to support a chip maker..
