|
|
I want to upgrade my K75SA rev 1 to the fastest CPU available.
According to the specs it has a maximum bus speed of 133Mhz. What is
the fastest CPU, Sempron or Athlon can I fit in it.
Will those labelled 266Mhz FSB work with it? |

The 133MHz is the FSB speed. Processors that are rated at 266MHz actually run on |
a 133MHz FSB, so yes, they will work. |

I ran a mobile athlon 2500+ with 2 x 512 MB DDR-333 from kingston
Fast and stable
As far as I can see, the Athlon 2500+ is unlocked up to 13.5x so 13.5 x
133 = 1800 mhz core but since it has 512kb of l2 cache, it lives up to
the 2500+ rating.
With an overclocking bios, you can go to 137mhz, 143mhz and 147 mhz

Your motherboard's true speed is 133mhz, but is also referred to as DDR
266mhz (133X2=266).
Fastest CPU supported is the AMD 2600+ (266)
Best CPU is the one with the Barton core, which has 512K level two cache,
most others just have 256K level two cache.
The Barton is best if you plan to overclock.
Look on EBay for "AMD 2600 Barton" or "AMD 2600 512K"
Here is a bios update for your board.

If I use a CPU rated at 333MHz will it be able to reduce its speed to
match the motherboard?
I have seen some of the CPUs described as mobile chips or XP-M, will
they also work? |

A mobile CPU could be problematic if the BIOS does not recognize the
CPU. There is typically no problem using a 333 rated cpu in a 266
speed mobo, the cpu simply runs slower than it is capable of running.
Since the k7s5a BIOS does not provide CPU multiplier changing options,
you'd have to use other tricks to obtain the desired multiplier (and
I'm not certain if the software out on the net for changing the multi
with the mobile chip will work with SIS chipsets, it might, google
around for it).
Here is one example of a software multiplier chanter for k7 chips:
http://crystalmark.info/software/CrystalCPUID/index-e.html
If I did not have my k7s5a system setup for daily work use I'd try the
mobile chip for you in the mobo, but alas, too much hassle atm for me
to do this.

Hi Kyle,
I was running a ATHLON XP-M 2500+ at 7.5 x 266 = 2000 (or something like
that).
With the Honey-X Bios, the CPU as reckognized as a mobile athlon unless
you underclock or overclock it badly and the Honey-X bios will allow to
change the bus speed and I think that you can also change the multiplier
on an unlock CPU.
I downgraded my system to an Athlon 800 and it is unfortunately locked
so I will try to unlock this old CPu tu run it at 133 bus speed instead
of 100
BTW my system suffered from great instability with SDRAm but even since
a switch over to good ddr ram (Kingston DDR333 Cas 2.5) and the Honey-X
bios, the K7S5A has been very relaible.
Unfortunately with that setup, my MSI 6600GT AGP graphic card never
worked and I purchased a Nforce2 barebone and took all of the good
componentsd to built this PC

I recall the honeyx BIOS allowing more FSB choices, but not any
multiplier changing options (in fact my k7s5a has the honeyx BIOS in
it).
