Can anyone please point out the differences between the
Fujifilm Finepix S5100/5500 and the newer S5200/5600 ?
I've gone through the detailed review of the 5100 at
DPreview but they didn't do one on the 5200.

Minor differences - The former has a 4mp sensor vs. 5mp. When
zooming, the S5100's lens extends and retracts. The S5200 uses a
non-extending lens, for whatever that's worth. The S5200 improves
the S5100's already excellent battery life by another 25%. Someone
here reported that the S5200 has no "sports" mode. Despite the
higher resolution, the S5200's sensor *might* be more sensitive and
have lower noise. Only a review will tell, but check the manual.
The S5100 only goes up to ISO 400. I assume that the S5200 goes
higher. The S5200 has additional features, but as I don't have a
manual for it I can't refresh my memory as to what they are. You
should be able to download manuals for both cameras from Fuji's web
site.

Thanks for a very informative reply. If photos are mainly for viewing
on a computer monitor, occasionally printed at 6x4 and rarely blown
up to 8x10 without severe cropping, am I right in thinking that the
difference between 4MP and 5MP is minimal ?

Hello,

I am brand spanking new to digital photography so I'll not even pretend to
know what I'm speaking of, but... I participate in a group of folks sharing
train photos. I was looking for something at an entry level price with at
least moderate results. It was suggested that I try to Fuji S5*** line that
some were using. It seemed that the 5200 was the only one still readily
available which suited me fine as it has ISO up to 1600 and it was to have a
very fast write to the card and a 40 frame continuous shooting mode that is
good for something coming at me at 60MPH

I only received it last week and had to send it back for a defect, so I
can't give much personal experience yet other that to say that even with a
bug I saw enough to think I'd like it.

When shopping I googled a number of reviews that were tough to sift through
with all the non-review hits and should have saved more of the urls. I did
still have this one in my history that you might find informative as to the
specs of the unit. I know that's not much to go on, but I hope this helps at
least a little:

This next one isn't really a review, but it lists all the specs. Sorry I
didn't mark more.

Yes, any differences would be hard to notice. Although I can't
count some of my relatives among the experienced digital
photographers, several years ago they were surprised at how good
pictures taken with my Canon Powershots (S10/2mp, S20/3mp) looked on
a computer monitor, and amazed when they still looked good after
being greatly magnified. These are very simple cameras, nothing
like the more recent S-series Powershots, and the S5100 produces
much better pictures.

Last week I saw a number of nice poster sized shots lining a
walkway in a shopping mall. I don't know what camera was used to
produce them, but they didn't seem to have more detail than I'm used
to seeing from the S5100. As I recognized the location of one of
the shots, I plan to duplicate the shot and see how it compares. On
the screen that is. I won't be making any 24" x 30" prints. smile
