I used a Verizon wireless card on a recent road trip, and felt it was worth the $50.00 per month subscription fee (costs more if one doesn't have a Verizon cell phone account). Access speeds were generally slow, although the card implies one will have "Broadband access." Speeds were usually somewhere between 14.5 Kbps - 56.5 Kbps.... usually closer to the slower baud rate. While using the card, I noticed my laptop's built-in wireless radio started indicating a specific wireless access account was available all the way from Santa Fe, NM to Albequerque, NM. I was of the impression that wireless transmissions were usually only good for a couple hundred feet, at best. Although I've also heard the U.S. government has long distance wireless transmission available to the Armed Forces, does anybody know anything about the type of long distance wireless transmission my laptop's radio found? I would have needed a key, btw. Thanks.
