I've spent the last few days trying to rid my husband's computer (of unknown breeding) of spyware. Have removed Alfa Cleaner and other items from Registry. Browser and desktop were hijacked. Have now installed Xoftspy and reloaded IE6. This has solved most of the problems in that I can now alter preferences on the desktop and the home page will load, but soon changes to www.dns404.net and a message saying that the page I want to view is blocked by Adware and to 'click here' to install Spy Trooper. This also happens if I endeavour to search from the browser address bar rather than through a standard search engine. It's running on an original version of XP Professional. Xoftspy scans produce no further infection notices. Before I throw it away in desperation and buy another one, has anyone any cheaper ideas, please? There are no files on it which need to be retained.
Thanks
Ronni

Microsoft.com has a new computer protecter called the Malicious Software Removal Tool. If you have an AOL account, they have an AOL Security center. There are many free spyware removale tools on the web such as SpyBot Search and Destroy, Lavasoft makes a few, and many others. Be careful and make sure that Spy Trooper isn't spyware itself.
