I need to replace the bad power supply in my Shuttle SK41G - it's the
original 200W Achme AM630BS20S that was installed at the factory.

I'm trying to decide between the Enhance ENP-2320, and some other
model/brand that I've found (FSP200-50PL). I was wondering if anyone
has had experience, either good or bad, using either of these power
supplies in their Shuttle XPC.

Enhance ENP-2320:
http://www.enhanceusa.com/file/27_specification.pdf

FSP200-50PL:
http://www.censuspc.com/product.php?productid=2208

I just don't wanna buy another power supply that's gonna crap-out after
a year or something - like the Achme did! Any advice will be much
appreciated.

best,
JohnB

I'd be very grateful if you would tell me where to get replacement power
supplies - I also URGENTLY need the same replacement as you.

do a search on froogle, and splurge on a silent one since it will cost you
$50 for the regular and $60 for the silent
there is a dealer on ebay with a bunch of them

or if you are handy with a soldering iron and have some caps lying around

Thanks for the useful info, John.

Too bad I didn't know to look for the bad caps BEFORE I went & bought a
new one! Actually, it's probably just as well that I replaced the
original Achme with a new one ("Sparkle" brand) - that way I'll have a
spare on hand anyway.

The brand name - Sparkle - doesn't exactly inspire confidence, but then
again the folks at Achme don't seem to be able to spell "Acme"
correctly. For that matter, "Shuttle" doesn't inspire too much
confidence either - think "Challenger" or "Columbia"...;-)

I'm very familiar with the infamous bad caps problem on lotsa
motherboards -
http://www.badcaps.net/
- but this is the first I've heard of it with it affecting power
supplies as well. Sheeesh!

thanks again,
JohnB

Sparkle / Fortron PSUs are generally among the best in the industry.

Thanks Max - that makes me feel better about my purchase. You can't
always judge a book by its cover, I guess.

Max,

I installed my new Sparkle power supply, and I havta say I'm really
disappointed at the horrendous noise level of the fan - it's easily
twice as loud as the original Achme - pretty much sounds like a freight
train! The case even has stickers that say "Ball-bearing fan" and "w/
Noise Killer". Supposedly the Noise Killer feature controls the fan
RPM's according to thermal conditions, but it seems to always run at
full-tilt (loud!) even when cold.

They're right: the "Noise" is "Killer"...;-)

Oh well, I suppose I can retrofit it with a quiet 40mm fan - <22dB(A)
or whatever.

best,

My Shuttle XPC SS51G uses the same power supply. It won't turn on. I'm wondering if it's the power supply or the front panel switch. Anyone have any hints as to how to determine?

Thanks,
Randy

Yes. Buy new P/S. Remove old P/S. Install New P/S.

Press switch. If unit turns on, it was the P/S.

Seriously, if you Google this group, there are a number of postings
dealing with this problem. I have a SB51G. Every once in a while it
wont turn on. When this happens, I unplug it from the wall, wait a
couple of minutes, plug it back in, and when I press the button, it
comes on no problem.

Another poster had pretty much the same problem. When he replaced the
P/S, the problem went away.

Seems like the stock P/S are NOT good. It is bad enough that the stock
P/S are only 200W, but then this????

I have not gotten around to putting in a new P/S yet, but it is on my
"To Do" list. I will get at least 250W, or 300W if I can find it. And,
yeah, I will probably retrofit the fan with a "good" one - if there is
such a thing. Seems most fans nowadays are cheap crap. :(

randyb,

I went thru the same thing trying to troubleshoot the exact same
problem with my SK41G. Since it would *intermittently* not power up, I
too had thought that it might be the front panel switch, ribbon cable,
or mobo header - so I spent a buncha time testing everything with a
continuity meter.

It turned out to be a bad power supply (see my previous posts here). If
you remove the cover on your stock Achme power supply, I would bet that
you'll see that a lot of the capacitors are swollen and/or leaking.
This is a well-known problem, as detailed on these sites:

http://forums.sudhian.com/messageview.aspx?catid=43&threadid=77499&highlight_key=y&keyword1=sn41g2

http://www.badcaps.net

Also, if you're thinking of getting a Sparkle power supply as a
replacement, see my previous post about their noisy-a** fans!

good luck,
JohnB
