Perhaps because I'm an old DOS guy, I like the simplicity of drive
letters and subdirectories found on hard drives, floppies, flash media,
etc. (For example, I use WebDrive from South River so my FTP site looks
and acts like my G> drive, even from the DOS prompt.) Is there a
software utility that makes a R/W DVD look like just another data drive
on Windows XP Pro file explorer? In other words, I want to pop in the
appropriate DVD media and it's another drive, just like floppy disks of
1980s.
The retail box for Roxio Easy Media Creator 8 suggests this feature's
included?
Any ideas?

DLA is what they call packet writing (UDF) software which Sonic
purchased from Veritas. It's a better and stabler implementation of
packet writing than Roxio's Drag-to-Disc (DirectCD). But check to see
if your burner is supported, though. The supported drives page at Sonic
has been broken for a long time. And I am not sure you can even
purchase it on line. Please post back your experience.

I use INCD, part of the Nero Package. This allows me to do essentially the
same thing, including the deletion of files, which DLA has no indication of
allowing. Since I don't use DLA, I can't comment further.

Windows XP allows writing to CDs in similar fashion. You can't delete
files without erasing the disc.

I use both. Windows won't access DVDs though. There are varied opinions
on the use of this type of software. Some have had amazing success, others
dislike it. You need to be the judge yourself.

Installed and have been using the Sonic DLA with mixed results.
Sometimes it works smoothly and flawlessly, other times it locks up my
system with the DVD-spinning non-stop. I'm going to look at these
issues:

1. I just upgraded my Sony VAIO laptop's DVD drive and I'm not sure the
new device driver got loaded. (Post a note here if you want to know
where the four screws are hidden on the PCG-FRV28 to r/r the DVD
drive.)

2. Format is inconsistent. Some brand new DVDs fail with a read-only
media error, but then format and work fine after a reboot. Once the
format fails, you gotta reboot to retry another format operation.

3. Seems to be data-rate issue, if you try to copy too many files to
fast (eg drag-drop multiple subdirectories simultaneously in File
Explorer) it will hang.

Again, all of these could be driver-related. Win XP device manager
says it's a Matshita UJ-820D (my old one?) but the dealer listing on
eBay #6837171426 says I just installed a UJ-810-B. The lower model
number (810B) doesn't make sense, because this is a faster DVD drive.

Details to follow.
