|
|
OK all you guys using a Tyan S2895 board in particular and wanting to
use 3GB of ram with Photoshop when running XP 32bit OS.
Over on the Adobe forum I picked up on that one should be able to set in
boot.ini a change that makes this possible, however the first time
around it caused me to loose control of the computer and the only way
out as I saw it was to reinstall XP. Now having reinstalled XP32 bit
from the ground up I again tied this switch before loading on XP64 as
well. This time whilst I still had control of the computer, the screen
had reverted to a basic display setting. It would not allow me to put in
the 1600x1200, millions of colours and my 85 refresh rate settings of
before making the switch. I have been able to go back to my previous
settings but what is going wrong here please someone?
May thanks for any insight.
Cheers

The 'point' about the /3GB switch, is _not_ to allow the use of 3GB RAM. |
In XP, memory can be allocated to 'system' (kernel) use, or to
'application' use. By default, XP allocates each application, a maximum of
2GB out of it's virtual memory map, reserving the rest for the Kernel. In
fact this is only the application 'address space', and a single
application can still talk to more than 2GB of virtual memory - the
virtual space can be a lot larger than your RAM size. Now the /3GB switch
should not cause behaviour like you are describing (though there are some
drivers, that can give problems with this switch enabled - perhaps your
video card has one of these). This comes about, because enabling this
switch, reduces the address space available to the kernel. If the video
card itself, occupies 256MB of the kernel memory map, and then has a large
AGP shared memory area, and there are lots of other devices using kernel
space - SCSI interfaces etc., then the kernel can have trouble fitting
everything into the 1GB area...
Have a look at:
http://blogs.msdn.com/oldnewthing/archive/2004/08/22/218527.aspx
which gives one of the best overviews of this option, and it's interaction
with PAE/AWE as well, as well as the 'costs' involved.
I'm afraid that enabling this switch, needs a lot more care than is often
realised.
For experimenting with this setting (and the others), it is well worth
copying the boot line in boot.ini, and increasing the timeout value, to
allow you to try the changes, and change back easily.

Dear Roger
Many thanks for this, and my apologies for not responding earlier this
afternoon. My only excuse being that my head has been deep in grappling
with things XP64 etc.! I will go and have a look at the link you
suggest a bit later on.
Best wishes
Richard
