I added another 512 meg ram to my pc so I am now have 1 gig. But after I
restarted the pc, my Dell keyboard no longer works! I am using a spare
one right now but like my Dell keyboard better. I don't have a clue what
has happened. It was not showing up in control panel or device manager.
I used the Dell Resource CD to try and re-install it but when I click on
"the install" button that comes up in IE I get a message that my IE
security setting don't permit this. Any advice please and thanks.

If it is a USB keyboard, boot the machine to the Windows desktop and then
connect it to the machine. Hopefully it will be re-detected and reinstalled.
Do this with your "spare" keyboard unplugged - unless you have to enter a
password to reach desktop.

Well, if the PS2 keyboard no longer works and you get no keyboard LED
illumination(NUM/CAPS/SCROLL lock), then the keyboard is either hosed or
your (purple) PS2 connector on the mb is bad.

You can confirm this with a second PS2 keyboard you know to be good, or try
plugging the KB to the mouse (green) PS2 port........

If the port is bad, then you'd have to replace the motherboard to fix it.
Or you could just go to a USB keyboard permanently...

Thanks for all your help. I wonder if a USB adapter plug might work -

have several of those lying around. If I get lucky, will post back.

The nice thing is that *if* the PS2/purple port is bad, then you can find a
USB keyboard that you like and use it - rather than buying a new mb....

Mike -

Please read this link and see if you might be able to help him pull off a
repair install of MCE:
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Ideally he'll have all of his files backed up. A repair install should
leave them mostly intact, but I never count on that.

Or.....that machine may very well have the Dell restore image intact
(hidden on the hard drive). Going in that direction WILL erase all
data/applications added to the machine since it was purchased by
returning the system to its factory "out of the box" software state.

CTL+F11 at the Dell splash screen to begin that process.

Stew

Hi Stew,
We will try what you have posted. I'll let you know what the
out come is. Once again thanks for your help.
Mike........

You're welcome Mike.

*As a minor aside, your mention of the power bump that began all of this
also reminds me that the power supply in that particular model has a spotty
track record. It doesn't appear that it would be in any way involved in
this, but it's something you may wish to make note of.
