Hi, I need help. This is my second week without a working computer
and I have no idea how to proceed. Here is the story:

My old motherboard died, I replaced it with a Chaintech CT-7NJL6.
Here is the current stats of the system:

Chaintech CT-7NJL6 motherboard
2 PC2700 DDR memory modules
Geforce FX 5500 video card
160G Sata HD.
AMD Athlon XP 2600+ (Barton)

The computer boots up, I try to install Windows XP w/SP2 and during
the installation, the system completely locks up. No blue screen, no
mouse movement, no keyboard response.

Everything on the computer is new except for two things: The CPU and
the power supply.

Question: Should I go ahead and just replace the cpu and the
heatsink/fan with another one or should I replace the power supply or
both or neither?

I honestly don't know which is the culprit and I rather not spend more
money on parts until I know just which one really needs to be
replaced.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

you might want to download memtest86 and run from floppy in dos mode to test
your memory is ok. an overnight test which throws up no errors is likely to
mean your ram is probably ok

are you loading the sata drivers at the beginning of your xp instllation
from floppy?

This is purely anecdotal, but I'll share anyway. I just tried to install

WinXP Home on my old 7njl6 which I gave to my brother. I had two
identical sticks of memory pc-2700 Hyperx from Kingston. They passed the
memtest 86 program, but if I ran them in Dual Channel mode WinXP Home
would not finish loading. I put the sticks in slot 1 and slot 2 thus
making it single channel mode and XP loaded and is stable. Then I went
to work ont he BIOS. When I return next week for the Christmas Holiday,
I will try and resolve the memory issue. Try the mem as single channel
and see if that helps.

i would think psu or memory timings.

if you can beg, borrow or buy a digital multimeter($15). check the
voltage on a 4 wire molex. yellow + black(12v) red + black(5v)

you can test memory with:

http://www.memtest.org/

you should have hd one channel and the cd drive on the other.

you could try loading fail safe default setting instead of optimal and
see if that helps.

let us know how it goes.
