PCB rev 1.1 and BIOS 1.1f running XP Professional. 640 MB PC133 SDRAM.

I've seen a discussion from early this year about upgrading and several of these pointers were great such as how to jumper for 500 even though the manual doesn't go higher than 450. But I still don't get it to work. The focus of that discussion is on overclocking but I don't think this pertains as I just want to run a CPU at its rated speed with a 100 MHz FSB on a 100 MHz FSB motherbord.

When booting BIOS will either report K6-2/350 or K6-2/506 (.../506) both continue until the screen blacks out (clicking from the video board) in preparation for the XP login screen. The 350 will continue nicely whereas the 500 will bluescreen. Sending the problem report resulted in M$ responding with a suggestion to make sure my video card (NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 Model 64) driver was signed. Did this and am now getting a different and much more brief bluescreen (unknown exception or some such).

Setting the 500 to 350 jumpering also causes bluescreens. The 500 has previously been running on an ASUS P5A-B for years without problems.

What is weird is that the system boots for untold billions of instructions (obviously the BIOS supports it) but then, at the last moment, it bluescreens. OK, so there is supposedly no support for 500 but this CPU won't run at 350 either.

I think the 350 is an AFX (26051) and the 500 is AHX (26351).

This may have to do with some driver being loaded by XP, but how?

Follow-up:

I've upgraded the BIOS which now correctly reports the CPU as k6-2/500 I usually am able to log in to my account but then I get the bluescreens.

The system log posts:

System error category 102 event 1003

But I don't know what it means

does the board have a way of raising the vcore for the cpu?

Yes it does but teh voltage requirements are the same for both processors.
