Well after running this mobo with a AMD K7 and 2000 Pro for a couple of
years, I decided to go against my very own rule of "if it's not broke
don't fix it" and "upgrade" to XP Pro SP2. Well, stability seemed fine
at first but then started getting checksum errors so flashed bios and
bought new battery for mobo. Things started to improve but then would
get a drive error that A: was not responding at shutdown but I never
installed a floppy drive and set bios to not even look for it. Then
programs started freezing and would have to end them from task manager.
Finally, they would freeze and the only alternative was to shut off
power. Well, finally, it now just won't boot at all and the bios doesnt
even appear on the monitor!!! When I power up, the HDs start spinning,
no bios info then everything just stops. Again have cleared cmos by
removing power supply cables, removing mobo battery and set jumper to
clear. Even disconnect HD and put in CD to boot.....no luck

Now I know why I put off this "upgrade" for so long!! Before I started,
I did do a backup but some of the data is on my mac (i'm using now) and
some on my slave HD on the windows machine. Here is the detail of the
system before XP. It's a little scattered, but you can see my info:

Are you sure the power supply is working properly?

My guess from the above info would be RAM failure. However, a failure
to boot up as stated below could well be a power supply failure.

Lastly, there have been many who complained of bulging caps on this MB.
If you see that occurring on yours, that too might explain the failure.

Try another video card. If that doesn't do it my guess is bad mobo.
I've had bad ECS boards, 848P-A7 and PT800CE-A and PowerColor ATI 9250
card in the last 3 months. Disconnect HD and CD/DVD.

I've seen problems like this before, quite a few times, the video card has
become unseated, you could try taking the video card out and pushing it back
in firmly. Probably won't be the problem, but it is worth a shot.

FWIW, I debugged a k7s5a that had all sorts of weird problems with HD
corruption and finally discovered that when I cleaned all the dust and
dirt off the mobo with a small paint brush that the HD problems went
away. Dunno if anyone else mentioned this, but you should have a look
at the capacitors near the CPU in the 3-phase power supply circuitry,
if any are leaking or bulging you may have a bad capacitor problem.
Also, remove and reinsert memory sticks, just to be certain the
connections there are made up.
