Fry's has some memory on sale.
I'd like to buy a couple of 512mb chips but am worried about
compatibility.

Large capacity modules (512MB and larger) are something of a gamble on
K7S5A, but I've had good luck with Elixir Original memory modules.

I recommend sticking with the industry standard 2.5V memory that is not
rated for high performance or overclocking; Elixir Original, Kingston
Value RAM, Corsair Value, Crucial, PNY, Spectek, etc.

PC2100 is the highest the K7S5A Pro can handle.

Fry's used to have a reputation for making returned purchases
a nightmare. But a few weeks ago I was very surprised when I
returned one of their Hummingbird pci modems and I sailed right
through the return process. They asked why I wanted to return
it, I said I had tried to get it to install, had gone to the
net, got new drivers, couldn't make it work, wanted to return
it. And they asked if I wanted cash or credit back to my card.

So you could ask them for advice about the best parts to put
in the board, they will likely claim that their most expensive
parts are better than the stuff on sale or with rebate. And if
you use appropriate care and they don't work then carefully
package them back up and return them. It might work out fine.

It used to be that pairs of sdram caused problems with the board
and the advice was to only use a single sdram or use ddr, singly
or in pairs, for dependability.

I've had that board running a long time with a pair of ddr 512's
that were on sale at Fry's and had no problems with anything but
the usual Windows software.

You might have problems with the high density RAM. I bought a stick of
512MB Kingston Value RAM DDR, and it would recognize the RAM but failed
while running. I put the RAM in another MB and it works fine. It was
PC2700 DDR.

I used two 256MB DDR memory sticks I bought from Fry's on my K7S5A Pro 5.0
Any name brand memory should work on the K7S5A Pro 5.0.
Stay away from Fry's generic no-name stuff.
The K7S5A uses (for the DDR slots) PC-2100 133mhz memory.
PC-2700 333mhz or PC-3200 400mhz memory will also work on the board,
but will only run at 133mhz speed.

I've been able to use cheap Kingston and PNY P3200 512MB and Spectec
PC2700 256MB modules with that mobo, but it wouldn't boot with any
PC3200 module when the BIOS was set to the safe defaults.

I've had so much trouble with name brand memory that I can't see how
generic Fry's memory can be worse. OTOH I always test memory overnight
with both MemTest86 (www.memtest86.org) and Gold Memory
(www.goldmemory.cz) and return any that fails at all.

i’d go with 3200 so you can use it later. i’ve run 2x512 corsair in my
pro.

no one in these threads seemed to have any problem with 512’s 3200.
