I have always had problems writing DVD's on my DRU-500A with other then
Verbatim media. The media I have now is Verbatim DVD-R 8x discs, but I just
bought Verbatim Photo Printable DVD-R 16x. And guess what? My DRU-500A won't
writo to it. I Wan't to throw the DRU-500A from a very tall building. But
how can I make sure my next DVD drive will work OK?
(Yes, I have the latest firmware for the DRU-500A)

If you stick to the right media then the DRU-500A is a good workhorse.

I had one for a long time up until very recently and found it very reliable
with Datawrite Grey Top (Fuji dye) and prior to that RiData (Ritek G04 dye).

The problem seems to be that new media (Verbatim) does not go down to 4x. I
bought a DRU-800A. :)
