After a certain amount of thrashing around and quizzing people,
I finally figured out how to make a CD that would autorun a
HTML file under Windows, Linux, and Mac, so I documented what I
did at http://research.silmaril.ie/autoruncd.

Nothing special, except that I couldn't find any page describing
this particular take. And I've skipped entirely the task of making
it work under old versions of operating systems :-)

Mail me if you find any errors: I'd like to make sure this is useful.

There is no autorun under MacOS X anymore. Therefore, I suppose that the
autorun feature produced by mkisofs is for Mac OS 9.

Maybe that was its intention, but the CDs I have produced do autorun
just fine in Mac OS/X.

Do you have the Classic environment running with the autorun feature
enabled in the Quick Time control panel? This is a method to get the
closest behavior to autorun under Mac OS X, as far as I know.

That's an interesing possibility. It was a colleague's iBook, so I
don't know. The interface on display was certainly OS/X. Hmm. Why did
they take it out of OS/X, I wonder?

Amongst Macintosh users, this feature is considered as ill-behaved. This
comes in part because of a massive viral attack, relayed through
magazine CDs, in 1990 or about. Since then, all Macintosh magazines rate
to disable this feature and Apple nailed the whole by deleting the
feature under Mac OS X.

IMHO, the autorun feature is a good thing if the user can select to use
it or not. For instance, say that you're showing a set of CDs to a
customer. It is better to have the CDs start automatically while you
continue to talk to the customer.

Aha. Sounds fair enough.

Mac users don't like things that smell of configuration. Everything is
expected to come preset.

Or if you're distributing a CD to users who might not know how to start
a browser and navigate to the CD drive, or how to drag and drop the CD icon
onto the browser icon, or a lot of other things.

Thanks for clearing this up.

Hallo,
this is very helpful article, thanks nod

Just on question: in paragraph 1.3.2 there is link to a linux scrip (wrong link: http://research.silmaril.ie/autoruncd/autorun). This link does not work for me.

Could you check this please?

With best regards

I'm sorry about that, I only just saw this. It's fixed now.
