We are trying to replace two 60GB Western Digital hard drives with two
new 160GB Seagate hard drives in an existing system. The motherboard is
a Soyo SY-K7V Dragon Plus with the Promise RAID onboard. The two 60GB
drives work fine with the Promise RAID as a Security Array. We cloned
the 60GB drives to the 160GB drives with Apricorn's EZ-GIG. The Promise
BIOS recognizes the 160GB drives and the Security Array just fine. But
when booting Windows XP, the Windows XP splash window comes up briefly
and it reboots (even in Safe Mode). If we try to reload XP (and load the
Promise v200B18 drivers with the F6 option) we get a STOP error
0x0000007B. We updated the motherboard BIOS with the latest Soyo BIOS
2BA7 and are using the latest Promise driver that Soyo has which is
v200B18. Also according to Soyo's site the motherboard BIOS version 2BA6
is supposed to have Promise BIOS version 2.0.00.23 and can support 130GB
or higher hard drives. BUT......according to Promise's site you need
version 2.0.00.25 to support 48-bit LBA for drives larger than 137 GB.
It also says..."this BIOS will not work with an existing operating
system (OS) installation. If you are going to upgrade your FastTrak100
BIOS to version 2.00.24, you must also do a new reinstall of the OS. We
are currently investigating this issue." Starting with a fresh operating
system really isn't an option here as there are just too many programs
that would have to be reinstalled. If you have any ideas on how to
remedy this problem it would be appreciated.
Also wondering if we were to install a new Promise RAID card in the
system and disabled the onboard RAID would we have to install a fresh
operating system on it then as well?
We have emailed Promise about this problem as well but are awaiting a reply. |

Latest bios for this mobo is 2ba9, but it's supposely meant only for duron
t-bred series of CPU, and i guess it has same promise driver.
also you can't just upgrade SOYO's bios with promise driver, for this you'd
have to have modified bios from SOYO.
i wonder what Promise guys will say... since i'm thinking of replacing my
two 60G drives, i think i'll just get two 120G ones... |

Promise has not replied with any resolution but the problem has been
solved. Installed two 120GB Maxtor hard drives and all works fine.
Thanks for the reply Sleeperman. |

well, some companies just ignore such mails...while SOYO replies, but with
useless info, like when i've had a problem, i clearly wrote that i DID
replace PSU, they still replied that i should change PSU...(while real
problem was installed two modules of RAM). It was clear that they have same
reply with only general advice, like try to change CPU (how again???), try
to change PSU, try to clear CMOS....etc...
it seemed almost like automated reply...
But, i'm glad you solved. Since 137G is that MAGIC limit, 120 is no problem.
I know i did once see some modified BIOS upgrade with unlocked and
full-featured promise, not only lite version, but don't recall where and
also...it is kinda risky...
OK, with 120G you do loose 40 G of space, but if needed you can always
install second array with additional two 120G drives... |
