couldn't see spending an extra $400 for ghosting in games, graininess in
some video playback and photos, etc.

You said it. When you can get a nice 19" CRT for $200, it's tough to
justify spending triple that for something which is arguably inferior.

Nope. You're smart.

I'm considering buying the VL1916 from costco. It will be used for video editing and graphics so image quality is important. Someone here said that the VL1916 is the Same monitor as the LCD19D. Is this true?? If so, I was looking at the LCD19D and it got some really bad reviews from a few dif. sites. CNet gave it a 6.4 and said...
"The good: Inexpensive; embedded speakers; analog and DVI inputs (both cables included).
The bad: Extremely poor contrast; poor overall image quality; limited adjustability.
The bottom line: The Princeton LCD19D is inexpensive for a 19-inch LCD, but you get what you pay for: very poor image quality. We can't recommend it. " |

The review is not accurate. The image quality is very good, one
of the best. He didn't setup the monitor correctly in it's native
res. Read all the true users reviews under that bad reveiw and
you will see how many people say different and just how good the
monitor really is. I am very happy with the VL1916, no complaints
here and I'm VERY picky about image quality!!!

I have a VL1716 I bought 6 months ago and really like it. I've recently upgraded to a dual-head GeForce graphics card and tomorrow I'm going to buy another VL1716.
I don't play games on my computer (much) and usually don't watch video on it either, I just spend 12+ hours a day writing code. My eyes, along with the rest of me, are not so young anymore so I need a bright, clear screen. The VL1716 fits the bill, it's bright enough to use even on the (covered) balcony in daylight.
If you're wondering about non-Windows support, I use mine with FreeBSD  and X.org 6.7.0. Configuration was a breeze, X.org recognized it as a "PGS" "VL 1716" from the DDC data and configured the Monitor section correctly with no adjustments. "Perfecting" the display from the menu really did result in perfection. The fonts are sharp and clear and the colors are bright and brilliant. Perfect for good syntax-sensitive editors, where you use font colors and attributes to help understand the code. |

Well, I have to disagree with this post. I purchased the VL1716, again from costco with the rebate and everything, and I thought was an excellent bargain. I had the Viewsonic VX700 for over two years with no glitches. Unfortunately the viewsonic set my standards real high up I guess. The Princeton was a complete disappointment. The blank screen (black but lit screen) is disasterously nonuniform with bright and dark stripes from top to bottom (less noticeable on other nonblack dark colors like dark blue). I called Princeton and the tech support guy told me to take it back to the retailer (thank God it's Costco) and that I wasn't the first to report that happen to this monitor. Viewing angles are an eyesore. I would say that the only pros are the good price, good brightness and DVI support. Thumbs down.

Date: January 20, 2004
I decided to do a review on these Princeton LCD monitor models
since they deserve a good review being that nothing comes up
on Google about them since they are brand new just released
models.
I have to say that I'm very impressed with these models. I
purchased two Princeton VL1916 models from Costco for $569.99
plus a $50.00 coupon off on each, bringing the price to $519.99
You cannot get a better monitor for this price, quality, and
performance. It is a 19" TFT Active Matrix LCD, 170°Super Wide
viewing angle, 700:1 high contrast ratio, analog and digital input,
25ms response time, 1280x1024 native resolution, very nice menu
system, nice case design with easy access buttons. For more info
