I have a stereo that only has a headphone output and my laptop only has a mic in so i'm using a 1/8" stereo plug to 1/8" stereo plug connector cable but the sound file is all distorted; can't recognize anything. Is there any possible way that I can not buy a tape deck and still use my current configuration but get this to work? Thanks.

Buying a tape deck wouldn't help according to what you're saying.
There is a *huge* difference between the level of a mic signal and the
headphone level. Are you *sure* there isn't a "line level" input for
the computer? The headphone output would work OK if it was going into a
"line level" input. You might be able to find a gizmo (maybe at Radio
Shack) that will knock the headphone level down to mic level, but the
things that have mic level output are mostly microphones.
